Im going on a long trip and want something to read

I read hyperion, other than some stupid action scenes I really liked it, but somewhere in last chapter I lost interest and returned the book. Should I buy fall of hyperion or is there any books thats better? I don't like stories that too dragged out without being interesting or ridiculous action scenes, the best part what I remember from hyperion was that priest stuck with that tribe

I think in its whole it is sui generis but if anything the prose reminds me of Joseph Conrad

It's about a sentient forest, the former Garden Eden, roamed by "The Erstwhile" and the colonial City that tries to devour it. It ultimately is a blend of historical fiction, high fantasy, religion - and it fucking works

I'm trying really hard to finish R. Scott Bakker trilogies, but so many of his characters are insufferable. I really dig the mix of sci-fi and fantasy, albeit I didn't realize some things were sci-fi until I read some reviews(the indigo-plague is just radiation poisoning).

I like the philosophical zombie idea, and I think its the first time I've seen it used in a meaningful way in fiction. The name Nogod is a bit on the nose. Is it worth it to keep going?

Fiction authors need to stop making up unpronounceable names for obvious fantasy tropes. I don't need a fuckin 80 page glossary because you refuse to call a dragon a dragon.

anon, as someone who only read part of the first book, It's unlike anything I've ever read but rather than being inviting the strangeness was too much fo me to handle. In the first few pages it describes in graphic detail how one the main characters cut up his wife's corpse, and made a bow out of her flesh. Later, we're introduced to deformed teenage boy with one eye and dwarfism who was raised in a basement by bakelite robots powered by his semen. He ends up discovering when he lashes out and beats one of them to death.

The colonial guy anon mentioned is a racist sociopath and sex offender with no redeeming qualities, but half the cast is so fucked up beyond that he actually seems comfortingly normal.

I am saying this as someone who normally likes surrealism and body horror: if the author's life story was more fucked up than Salvador Dali's I would not be remotely surprised

I got that way with erotic literature. I used to read a lot of erotica. Roughly estimating, I've read about 500 stories. But I've skimmed through probably 1500. Because I'm so sick of certain tropes, that I cynically skim through stories just to see what tropes they're using and how.

Really good. When it was recommended to me there was talk of vampires in space, which there are. So I was afraid of that, thinking it would be something corny, but it was done really tastefully and well.
The whole take on vampirism is a re-conception of vampires as predators, not monsters. Like a cross between a shark and a chess grandmaster. Watts’s twist on an old archetype is hair-raising. And his background in biology shows, giving it all both a hair of believability and credibility.

Seems like a really simple thing given the way cultivation works as power levels to have the protagonist pretty evenly matched against people of their own level but almost nobody else writes it that way.

I shed a damn tear for Sol's story in Hyperion. Its payoff in fall is completely lame and ruins everything that made it good. The priest's story carries on into books 3 and 4, which by all accounts are not worth reading, so you don't get a full payoff on that. He brings back fucking Keats as a character, again, and makes him space-Joseph. Every predictable thing happes. Fall fucking sucks, just treat Hyperion as a standalone and come up with a headcanon or read a synopsis to see how it pays off.

If it's clever and well written, then yes. Why not? A lot of great literature uses the society and politics of the time as a source of inspiration, used not just to satirize or comment on real world events, but as the backdrop for a more classical approach (plot, themes, characterization). The better ones do it subtly enough it's completely unobtrusive to the point it's just another potential layer of the analysis.

My point is you make it sound as if political = bad by by definition, which suggests you either don't read much or trivial shit makes you bad to the point you can only see that. One book or a series of books, in a lifetime of reading, is not going to ruin your life or something.

Realtalk: is the retard here a mod or do the mods just refuse to enforce any rules here anymore? I've reported him like 10 times for off topic /pol/ shit in the past and I've never seen a single post deleted

anon, your newfag is showing. While the mods have always allowed abuse and /pol/shit even though it's technically against the rules there's always been a pretty distinct line in the sand between on-topic retardation and off-topic. It's one thing if you're hurling a copypasta'd wall of all-caps racial slurs at an author, but if you're hurling a copypasta'd wall of all-caps racial slurs at an author in /ck/ and the thread isn't discussing how Gene Wolfe invented Pringles, then that's the shit that gets the ban hammer.

Well, that and whatever generals the local mod hates. Redwood made a habit of doing that.

One of the stories is about a group of wizards being attacked by a feminist who wants to turn all men into trannies. Overall I enjoyed it, particularly the two Cugel stroies.
The idea of a dying world built on the bones of greater lost civilizations kind of echos the modern scifi situation.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I’m not big on romance fiction. Will look into the other one, though. I liked the world she built. I like that she purposefully eschewed delving into the high politics of the world, because they were irrelevant to the story. I liked quick-paced writing style. Hopefully her other book is like that too.

I read The Fifth Season based entirely on the back cover blurb, without knowing anything about the author or series. I enjoyed it when I read it, and I think the world was genuinely quite interesting and mysterious, but there were a few moments that stuck out a little bit for me, like I could feel the author had a chip on their shoulder about something. The tranny kid, the rough gay sex, the weird comment about pale-skinned people burning in the sun, but other than that it was fine. I don't think it was worth winning a Hugo, but that whole award has become a circle-jerking mockery of itself so I guess I should care.
