Did he save metaphysics?

literally ended it, by his account. you can read two dogmas in all of, what, thirty minutes?

>> No.15453038

He threw it a life-preserver when it was close to death, but the real 'saving' happened later in the century, with the work of Lewis and Kripke.

wasn't his attack on the analytic/synthetic distinction enough?

>> No.15453122

>>15452960
No? That's Quine, who thinks psychology and epistemology is the same thing

>> No.15453139

>>15453122
He thought that epistemology should be a subfield of psychology

That did the opposite of ending it. It was an attack on logical positivism, which leaned on the distinction in their attempt to eliminate metaphysics. Metaphysics is perfectly acceptable to Quine when understood as the set of ontological commitments of our best scientific theories. Read 'On What There Is'.

The thread is about Quine's attitude to metaphysics, not epistemology.

disregard quine, obtain strawson

Will do but I thought the upshot of Two Dogmas was radical empiricism i.e., the ever-subject-to-change web of knowledge? Seems like a pretty clear Humean style reduction as compared to, say. Lewis style metaphysics where we permit a whole lot in.

I mean...our epistemology is how we’re gonna secure our metaphysics...but that’s none of my business.

Bohr never said that.

So just science

>> No.15453832

>>15453817
Science interpreted realistically rather than instrumentally. So, whatever our best theories quantify over, no matter how exotic, must be assumed to exist.
