>But as in landlessness alone resides the highest truth, shoreless, indefinite as God—so, better is it to perish in that howling infinite, than be ingloriously dashed upon the lee, even if that were safety! For worm-like, then, oh! who would craven crawl to land! Terrors of the terrible! is all this agony so vain? Take heart, take heart, O Bulkington! Bear thee grimly, demigod! Up from the spray of thy ocean-perishing—straight up, leaps thy apotheosis!

Started this today, just finished the first 100 pages, might read a bit more or might watch a film or summat, all I want to say is fucking hell lads, I knew this was meant to be good, but not this fucking good.

Do a favour to yourself anon and don't watch a movie about this book. Just read it through and through and contemplate on existence.

The passage where he compares sleeping in a cold room with nothing but blankets to keep you warm to being a spark in the arctic (I forget the exact wording here) is my personal favourite.

is that the one with Gregory Peck? I liked him in Roman Holiday, so I might watch it just for him, although I don't imagine a film could even get close to as good as the book.

Yes, god, I love that book so much and if I had the bad luck of watching the film first i wouldn't even have gone near it.

yeh I mean there's been so much already, whether it's a whole page, a paragraph, or just like half a sentence, where I've read it and my brain just gets sent into orbit because of how mind-bogglingly good it is.

Never watched the film but I am kind of curious how they did it. I can understand them cutting a large part of Ishmael’s musings but does the film include Ahab’s badass speech from The Candles chapter? Probably my favorite part of the book.
