So, The Dark Tower.

I understand that bits and pieces of King's other books are referenced in the series, but how much should I know about them? Are his other books required reading to really get into the series?

No, they're not at all necessary. The Dark Tower series was the first King I read. If you do really want to read referenced stuff first, there's usually a list of related books in the front of each book of the dark tower.
The most related ones are Insomnia, Hearts in Atlantis, and 'Salems Lot, though.

If I were you, OP, I would just read The Dark Tower, and then at the end read through a wikipedia article about the references to other works.
