Psychology (in contrast to neurology) is a scam. The only seriously scientific psychologist ever is Watzlawick.

The whole history of psychology starts and ends with the Greeks. The Greeks thought, hysteria was caused if the uterus (Greek word: hystera) wasn't properly suplied with sperm. Therefore, it became hungry and searched for food. It ended up biting into the brain which caused hysteria. Thus, they tried to find a husband for hysterical girls as a cure. Get laid - get healed.

Fast forward (about 2500 years). A guy called Franz Anton Mesmer enters the stage. Guy writes books about a so-called "animalic magnetism" and treats 16yo girls in his "hospital". He hypnotizes (he says: magnetizes) them by touching them and gets the wildest results. If one of the relatives of these girls gets a little bit too interested in what he's really doing, well, he simply fakes one or two letters to comfort them and signes them in the name of his little patients.
Meanwhile, gynaecologists all over the world finger their patients (later on they'll use vibrators) to cause a so-called "hysterical crisis" (later on simply called "female orgasm") to cure their hysteria.
Mozart writes an opera on Mesmerism, Mesmer teaches a guy called Charcot about "animalic magnetism", Charcot becomes one of the most famous French neurologists, Bram Stoker writes a book about Mesmerism in which one of the characters - called: van Helsing - explicitly mentions Charcot, Freud becomes one of Charcot's students.
Freud gets rid of the stuff about magnetism (meanwhile called hypnosis) but stays with the stuff about subconsciousness, which was formerly influenced by said hypnosis, and all the stuff about being completely underfucked (you do remember the gynaecologists, their vibrators and the hungry womb). The whole "being underfucked" seems to be his favorite topic - therefore, he elaborates on the question: who wanted to be fucked by whom?
Voila: a brief history of psychology.

Still all of psychology basically screams at you: GET FUCKED. The rest of it is just mambo jumbo they pull out of their ass and don't have the slightest clue about.

tl;dr: if you have a problem with your brain go see a physician; if you have a problem with your soul (your psyche) go see a philosopher (at least they know what they're talking about) or simply get laid properly (because that's what all of psychology is about anyways).

Also no psychologist, unless he is a psychoanalyst (which is just one of the many schools of psychology) takes Freud or his theories seriously.

I'm a German libertarian. I'm an agnostic with an M.A. in philosophy. And I believe Judaism is a religion like Christianity or Buddhism, nothing more, nothing less.

I simply consider the story about hungry wombs to be absolutely ridiculous, and I love the Mesmer-Charcot-Freud connection. That's why I like to tell other people about it.

I personally don't have a problem with psychology as long as it's not used as a weapon (that means: as long as the relationship between patient and psychologist is voluntary). Nevertheless, I only consider psychiatry to be a science, while I don't think the same about psychotherapy.
