What does /lit/ thinks about Jack Kerouac? Obviously, the grandfather of hipster girls and hipster boys...

>> No.1577318

I liked him when I was 14.
read some recently and it made me cringe.
Big sur wasn't awful.

thats about it really

>> No.1577328

I don't like Kerouac in fact I hate him but for fuck's sakes let's at least admit the Beats were a movement and expressed something.
Hipsters wear funny, sometimes anachronistic, clothes. That's it.

>> No.1577333

beats were overrated. If we've learnt one thing from the 50/60's counter culture its that "movements2 were overrated.
Talking loud and saying nothing

Amen. Modern hipsters are devoid of any real attachment to anything. They have only cold irony, and when you peel that away, you realize it's just a bunch of crassly commercial fads.

>> No.1577341

I can see the beats being a bit like the hipsters in that they felt superior to everyone else and shunned people who didn't speak or think like them. But at least they had a point of view and talent. However, I sometimes find them a bit naive and oblivious, hanging out with criminals and lowlifes and romanticizing their way of life.

Kerouac's a good writer, though. I like him. His technique sometimes makes his books drag a bit or appear aimless but then he'll hit you with a piece of writing so good and flowing that you can't help but think of him as a genius.

Beats only seem like they had some sort of authenticity because we look back at them with rose-tinted glasses. They were as superficial as whatever fad is predominant today.

EG. keroac talks empathy, zen, the joy of life. IRL he was an alchoholic drop out, anti-semite homophobe (who sucked allen ginsbergs dick).

What is Jack Kerouac best work?

>> No.1577354

Kerouac wouldn't have liked hipsters.
He didn't like beatniks.

I was really into "the beats" when I was younger. The only one I really view as having much value now is burroughs. I liked his early aautobigraphical work and naked lunch. The cut-ups were rubbish but the books he put out in the 80's were really good. I don't really consider them great writers per se.
If you're interested in rading on the road etc you should read bolanos savage detectives instead

not meaning to sound ike a troll or a prick

>> No.1577380

I read On The Road and wasn't impressed. It felt amateurish, repetitive, choppy, and pointless. That's not saying there weren't good parts - there were a few, but they were too far and few between.

Really, there's only so many times he can call Dean mad or describe a jazz show before I get irritated.

I agree with this anon about Burroughs and about reading Roberto Bolano. As far as Kerouac is concerned, I enjoyed On The Road. The book is not one of my favourites but I love Dean Moriarty as a character. It's not often that I can imagine a character with such clarity, and I think that is worthwhile.
