2. Academia is an actual nightmare, tread carefully
3. I fell for the "follow your passion" meme, I'd strongly urge you to pursue a major that opens career opportunities in lucrative fields. Take classes for literature on the side, or become an autodidact and well read on your own terms.

>a major that opens career opportunities in lucrative fields
The idea of dedicating a large portion of my life toward work that I pursue strictly to make money seems like a huge fucking crime against humanity. I’d like to make money doing work I love, and I don’t want to settle for anything less than that. It’s not just that, I would be miserable. I don’t mind having a job, even a gruesome labor intensive job, I understand how important money is, but the idea of shaping myself up as a stooge for an indefinite time for the purpose of making the big big money, it’s not just like against my religion or “not me”, I won’t do it. I’d rather be homeless then be selling car insurance

I wish I could bring my favorite books to a classroom and read for the first hour. Then discuss for mmmm my notes for the second hour. I’d like to do this for weeks until I’ve generated a thoroughly consistent original idea that I can put to words. And then I’d like to spend a year crafting this with said person until it’s perfect. A perfect book. Then spend a few months looking for a publisher with a set plan to your give lectures on the topic. I would do this for years, many books. With friends around the world who can discuss and build and share ideas I would buy a cottage in Iceland and invest in building a public library where my works could be archived

Welcome to the real world. 85% of Americans hate their jobs.

Work really hard. Wake up at 5am, work out, take school really seriously. Don’t use social media, don’t watch television. Develop your interpersonal skills. Realize that you’re a nobody with no skills and no new ideas and college is where you prove yourself.

I graduated with a degree in a field that I’m passionate about and now work a shitty corporate job. I didn’t take school seriously enough, and I sort of let mass culture rot my brain. I had no discipline. Trying to fix my life now.

The biggest meme about college is that, rather than learn, you’re there to get certified as a member of the bourgeoisie so you can get a white collar gig. The second biggest meme is that it’s a four year break from the real world where you’re supposed to have fun.

If you want to have a better outcome than the vast majority of Americans slaving away in a hellish, proletarianized private sector, you have to be more disciplined than them. Bottom line.

I have an MA in Philosophy and I have never met a non-Philosophy degree person who actually knew what he was talking about. Autodidacts aka amateur hobbyists tend to overestimate their abilities, nitpick philosophical ideas they already agree with and generally use philosophy as a self help tool. They're the Peterson crowd basically, and they tend to be extremely dogmatic about their philosophical views. No Phil major would ever get upset if you call Derrida full of shit, or Heidegger a spineless nazi. They'd probably agree with you, actually. The activity of Philosophy (discussing with fellow students, interacting with expert professors, writing essays etc) naturally kills any dogmaticism. It's the autodidacts who read 'Critique of Pure Reason' without any prior knowledge, pretend to understand it, and then decide they actually 'disagree' with it and claim that Kant was 'wrong'. Actual philosophers are less interested in agreeing or disagreeing with ideas, and more interested in trying to understand the great thinkers of the past and how they were connected to each other and their times. The university is the perfect place for this activity, unless you go to some political activist American college.

It's like studying mathematics for six years and then arguing with someone who read an 'Introduction to Math' pdf file. Problem with philosophy is that it's easy to bullshit to others who have no knowledge about philosophy, whereas with math this won't work. This is why someone like Peterson has such a massive appeal among an ignorant audience, who are dogmatically 'against' Marx and Derrida even though they have no idea what those people's ideas were and how they developed over time. Derrida got a lot of criticism when he claimed that philosophy is stricly European and Asians only have 'thought', yet Peterson makes you believe he is some sort of super communist villain when no French intellectuals after the 60's actually took Marxism seriously apart from that hack Sartre.

When Peterson debated Zizek his mask fell off when it was obvious he did not even understand the basic tenets of Hegelianism. Imagine what Zizek must have been thinking when Peterson told him 'You have a very strong identity.' 'You are a very unique individual, which is admirable' 'You are the strangest Marxist I have ever met'. You can see him just smile and nod and pretend to respect him, while in reality it's as if a child rambles and an adult has no other option to smile and pat his head lovingly.

So yes, if you're not studying Philosophy at a good university you might as well just never read any philosophy at all. Just stick to self help books and bro stoicism, lift some weights and update that Tinder profile and your urge to "read" "philosophy" will disappear.

Intellectual elitism is not a dogma, merely a side effect of a better grasp on reality. Or are we gonna pretend some random peasant has just as valid views as an expert? Isn't that the 'postmodern Marxism' your daddy Peterson warned against?

Philosophy has always been an elitist activity. The angry democratic crowd put Socrates to death for being annoyingly more knowledgeable than the average Greek joe.

If you want to praise mediocrity, be my guest. But I'm not gonna pretend your opinion matters.

That’s actually Burger Kings Impossible Whopper! a burger made with a plant-based, protein-filled patty. This week, the chain unveiled the next iteration of its Impossible offerings with a new breakfast sandwich: the Impossible Croissan’wich.

When Burger King's original Impossible Whopper hit stores nationwide, many were upset that even though the veggie burger isn't made with any meat (or animal byproducts), the burger itself isn't 100% vegetarian when ordered with no modifications. EBT accepted at specific locations
