Weird fiction or just horror?

Some horror to check out is Ligotti
Some weird fiction idk, other anon always suggest Mieville or HPL's contemporaries

I'm not sure if it's even horror, I don't know what to call it, maybe scifi/fantasy? I read a couple books by William Hope Hodgson because Lovecraft praised him, and they were probably closer than anything else I've heard of, though I much preferred At the Mountains to either of them.

The height of horror is probably reached by Goya and I don't think he's particularly lowbrow. Poe makes a fairly strong case for written horror and even Henry James did The Turn of the Screw. Also my engagement with the genre isn't a deliberate attempt at scoring a particular amount of status points, it just resonates with me. To even begin to understand what Lovecraft does well you must first see him in the proper context

>The height of horror is probably reached by Goya and I don't think he's particularly lowbrow.
No, but I'm not particularly impressed with any of the romantics save for a few.
>Poe makes a fairly strong case for written horror
See above. I despise all of his poetry though I never gave his short stories a shot.
>and even Henry James did The Turn of the Screw.
Another fucking Romantic?
>lso my engagement with the genre isn't a deliberate attempt at scoring a particular amount of status points, it just resonates with me.
So why did you start acting inflammatory when I disagreed with you?
>To even begin to understand what Lovecraft does well you must first see him in the proper context
I see Lovecraft as a forgettable mediocrity.

>Another fucking Romantic?
As opposed to what?
>So why did you start acting inflammatory when I disagreed with you?
I said
>you can't constructively or incisively critique horror
and that was just me trying to inform you on why your opinion is useless. You don't understand the purpose, the mechanics or the structure. You don't fundamentally understand Hitchcock and your input is not useful for attaining a deeper understanding of the work.
>I see Lovecraft as a forgettable mediocrity.
Because you don't understand horror, he's a bigger figure than Poe and he'll grow bigger
