Nietzsche was probably the least consistent philosopher who ever lived and changed his views over his lifetime. That's why you have to read all of Nietzsche to get him. His books (especially the gay science) contain a lot of practical advice for solitary individuals. I don't know how one could see him as a father figure though, he's more of a sympathetic companion showing you how to overcome the pain he went through.
