Everytime I find a good book accidentally, I get depressed and wonder what other masterpieces are hidden in some corner.
What is your method of finding good books?

Not a very efficient method, if you, for example, mostly read classic books, the authors your favourite authors will cite will be even older. So your scope wouldn't progress beyond 19th century.

join discussion/book groups on facebook or other social medias, look for book reviewers whose taste matches your own, talk to friends and ask them if they read anything good, listen to people talking in the streets, jot down books named during movies or tv shows or in songs or in other books, look for "top whatever" lists both on here and through google and write down every book that looks interesting, make a to read list not to let yourself forget them, browse lit's threads with suggestions, make an account on a book rating site and start adding people that consistently like the same books you did etc. etc. etc.

I know what he means. When you happen across something good by pure chance it's disconcerting, because it suggests there's no sensible structure in place to make sure people get the good stuff, and so there could be loads of nuggets hidden away that you're missing. It's a bit like driving around randomly looking for a hospital and coming across one and saying "Oh, here it is, but there were no signposts; what if I hadn't found it?" and people saying "Well, you did find it, so no harm done".

When I was young I had the following conversation many times:

Me: This is really good

Parents: Yes, it is, aren't you glad you found it?

Me: No. I wish I had found it ages ago, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME IT WAS GOOD

Parents: Well there's lots of good things, we can't tell you everything, you have to find them yourself.

Me: BUT I WASTE 99% OF MY TIME WADING THROUGH STUFF THAT ISN'T GOOD.

Parents: It's hard to recommend things because it's a question of what you're ready for.

Me: BUT I WOULD HAVE BEEN READY FOR THIS TWO YEARS AGO <rushes at parents and bites them viciously>

Parents: Don't bite us.

Anything you can get your hands on is recommended although I'm not sure how much of it is translated to english.

1. Gather all the books you like
2. List the publishers
3. Go through the publisher's catalogue
4. Find books

Obviously this doesn't work as well for major publishing houses like Penguin and Oxford, but it's likely a handful of the books you like were published by smaller presses which will be more selective about what they publish.

For instance, I've never read a book published by nyrb that I haven't enjoyed, so if I see they've published something interesting I'll get it. After reading Denton Welch's In Youth is Pleasure I looked up the publisher (Exact Change) and found some other books that looked interesting.

This also works for movies and music. If you like a film, look up the production company or distributor (or even the cinematographer) and see what else they've done. If you like an album, look up the label.

I have a huge list of thousands of authors which I've compiled over a number of years. What I'll do is pick a random line in that file. If I know of the author and have read his books, I'll look for a quote of his, or the title of his book on google (this works better for more obscure books), most of the time there willl be some unknown blogging or commenting on said book, then I can look through that blog/poster's history and see what they've been reading, etc. I also like using wikipedia's e.g. "male german writers from the 18th century" type of list. That being said, I've always most enjoyed simply spending an afternoon at a library or used bookshop just looking through what they have. A virtual way of doing that would be to look up sellers from ebay/abebooks and see what they have in their inventory.

What a retarded take. There's this thing called 'subjectivity' you might want to read about. I will say I'm impressed by your ability to take something so unimportant and inane and turn into a HUGE ISSUE that merits freaking out and obsessing over...must be a fun way to live!
