Recommend me some good modern/contemporary lit dealing directly or indirectly with the themes of self-exile from a community. Would appreciate films also.

I've made a mess of my life and I want to move to another country, I'd like something relatable.

In before Uncle Ted.

There was a guy who went into a little spot in the woods of Vermont. Raided a nearby camp every once in a while. Did that for like 31 years I think. Some goober wrote a book about him. Don’t recall the title.

Maybe a travelogue would be nicer

They both sound interesting, thank you.

Pretty impressive to evade detection for 31 years if he was just robbing food constantly.

You're thinking of Maine, we had the North Woods Hermit or some name like that who was well known but not caught until very recently.

Not exactly self-exile but it is about guy not really fitting in world he is living in. Really good book anyways would suggest anyone to read it.

Nemesis, Philip Roth
Can't tell you anything, even the fact that I suggest it is a major spoiler

The Late Mattia Pascal, Luigi Pirandello
A staple of modern italian literature, it deals with loss of identity and voluntarily cutting oneself off from society
