nah, i find management/comms majors pretty insufferable, to be honest. encounter a lot of them.
my quick story: i did a specialized build-your-own degree at a subset of NYU called gallatin. i studied architecture, english and political theory.
i did internships undergrad that opened some doors in the corporate world; i used that to swing a first job at ABC into a PR role at a major firm in DC. from there i entered grad school for poli sci and continued to work PR on the side; learned things like graphic design and adobe through practice and participated in some pretty significant marketing campaigns. just through connections within the PR/corporate world i had an opportunity, left grad school and re-entered corporate full time.

I've seen that USSR Olympiad book before, but never paged through it. Please let me know any interesting, relatively easy or devilish problems it has. Grigori Perelman is supposed to have logged a perfect performance at the competition in his youth, and I wonder if some of the problems he was set are in that book.

I have not finished Sowell yet but yeah, it's important to be diverse in your readings, especially when it comes to politics. I mainly read non-fiction but novels definitely help when you're burnt out on information overload. I'll definitely consider "book-length non-fiction". I just finished The State and Revolution and it was definitely a nice break from the heavier stuff.


As for the USSR Olympiad book, it has some of the classic mathematics questions, like devising a formula for the smallest number of moves to complete Tower of Hanoi. It's almost entirely focused on Algebra and Arithmetic/Number Theory. Decent amounts of Cauchy–Bunyakovsky–Schwarz inequalities. Number Theory is a huge weakness of mine, so I struggled a ton on those problems. One rough one was "prove that every positive rational number can be written as the sum of three cubes of positive rational numbers" Honestly, compared to the math competition books that I have read from the U.S., the level of difficulty in the USSR book just blows them out of the water. No real chance of a high school (or even undergraduate) level student in the U.S. being able to do most of these IMO

I got the Lovecraft and Arthur Conan Doyle editions. I actually hate them. The print and the paper quality is so shit. I never bothered reading them. I generally hate hardcover so for me a Penguin classics or any other descent used paperback bought for a fiver is world nicer to read and those memes.
