>walking down the street today and accidentally bump into a girl
>her things drop (notebook and an apple and shit)
>oh god i'm sorry let me help you!
>it's pissing it down so i grab her things and run with her into a little cafe to escape the rain
>she laughs the incident off and as i'm giving her her stuff back asks me if i want to stay and have coffee
>i say sure but i dont drink coffee so i'll have one of those milkshake things they make
>she has a coffee i have one of those
>we sit down and i'm sorting her stuff out for her
>notice she has a copy of The Great Gatsby
>ask her if she enjoyed it
>she says she loved it coz Nick is such a reliable narrator it made it really interesting
>i stare at her blankly wondering if this is some kind of joke
>i try and explain my opinion that no narrator can be seen as 'reliable' in extremis.
>she looks annoyed and i ask what else she thought about the book
>she said she felt really sorry for Daisy
>i stared blankly again and felt like i wanted to leave
>she explains that all her friends hated Daisy but she was probably a good mother and they shouldn't be so hard on her
>i ask her what she thought of it's portrayal of the American Dream
>she said she didn't really get what the author was trying to say
>i finish my milkshake (FUCK WHY DID I ORDER IT WITH CREAM ON TOP TOO?) and make my excuses
>she walks out with me leaving half her coffee
>ask her which way she's going and say im going the other way
>gives me her number, name and a hug, while she's next to my head she whispers 'text me alright?'
>feel confused as i get the bus home, throw her number away because she was so dumb.

So, Great Gatsby general? it's one of my fav's and i think it's pretty much essential /lit/ reading, what did you all think about it?

>the force of his weight cause me to drop my things to stop myself falling

>I tell him to just let me sort it out, and I go to the nearest café
>the fat creeper has followed me
>I get a black coffee (tired from studying all day) and sit down out of the way for some light reading (Gatsby)
>fatty comes over with a glass of cream or something, and asks me about what I enjoyed
>I look annoyed, and give him a curt answer about the social commentary and the lost generation
>he starts muttering some high school crap about narrator reliability
>I tell him that's cool, and get back to reading, hoping he'll go away
>I can hear his mouth breathing getting louder, and the rain has brought out his sweaty dog smell, so I leave
>fat fido chases after me. He tries to grab me and asks for my number, but I just get away as quickly as possible

Fuck's sake. I quite liked that café too.

She feels sorry for Daisy ? That says a lot about her own character.
Is Nick reliable as a narrator ? I suppose, but we really don't have a frame of reference outside his POV to judge by - what does he take away from it, is he going to use the lesson of Jay's futile reaching and stop beating on against the current, drop out of the rat race etc., or is he giving up and saying that this is inevitably the human condition ? I have to think Nick is fatalistic.
Does it have to be just about American Dream ? Nah, I think it's Fitzgerald's observations about the privilege of carelessness that the old money class afford themselves, and the nouveau riche of any country which aspires to delusions of equality with them and fails - this may be even more pertinent in English society than American. The trappings of upper class is not in the mansion or parties or source of income or even pedigree (real or invented) - it's in the ability and willingness to run little people over and not give a second thought.
I guess as an American Dream novel, though, it's the green light across the water that keeps that going.

Hey, wait - maybe that chick was waiting for you to challenge her. Oh shit dude, you shouldn't have lost her number regardless. Fuck.

this is really good thanks for actually posting relating to literature!

yeah i found her feeling sorry for Daisy to be fucking retarded, she's vain and full of herself and imo has no endearing qualities.

i was focusing more on the point that in reality NO narrators ca be classified as reliable, even if they're oniscient 3rd person narrators.

I felt a little bit wearisome of Nick at the end, he still seems to be a part of the rate race and i really wanted him to just up and leave his job and house and just...get away. But i feel like he wouldn't as a character, that he got too caught up in everything even though he tried not to.
And that even if he did get out someone else would just take his place.
You're totally right about the trappings of the 'old money' it's not the actual money that gets you there, it's the brutish yet civilised life style (tom anyone?) compared to Gatsby who was nice as fuck but could never really make it.

i really loved this novel, definately one of my fav's.

also i don't think she wanted me to challenge her, i think she was just a bit slow.

I would have raged hardcore. Gatsby is mandatory /lit/ reading. People who don't get Gatsby are either retards, faggots or both.

>> No.1607811

I actually found Daisy to be quite a tragic and sympathetic character. Sure, she's totally horrible, cold and terribly irritating, but there's more to her than that. There's this thing she says, something like "The best thing for a girl to be is a pretty little fool"
That in itself is very telling of Daisy's character. It's hard to be an intelligent beautiful woman because people always have a preconception about you: You're beautiful so you must be stupid. You must be shallow. You must be materialistic. la la la etc etc. Daisy uses this to her advantage, and even enjoys it. But she does break down. That scene where she bursts into tears because of Gatsby's letter tugs on your heartstrings quite a bit. She seems to love this man, but her desire for the materialistic, for a better life, restricts this love and so she must close herself off. I see her as a very strong, yet cruel woman.

Nick pisses me off though. Best character was Owl-Eyes.
