This chart is completely retarded in both the sense that you're always supposed to read stuff in publication order and that it doesn't give you an order to actually read everything in, just strips that intersect and go back on themselves. Bullshit. Discworld really is the most reddit of fantasy, even more than LotR.

The Discworld books do not have a strong narrative connection that requires reading all of them in chronological order. Excluding the first two books, none of them really ends on a cliffhanger. The books are not numbered Book Four of the Saga of the World of the Disc, they are stories in themselves.
Besides, what does
>the most reddit of fantasy
even mean? Does it mean it's not grimderp like Prince of Thorns-Up-His-Ass?

Vance stands on his own. His prose is excellent if you don't mind purpley stuff. Imagine a crafty storyteller that likes flowery phrasings, full of color, with abrupt turns of phrase. His dialogues, in particular the cheek and wit of them, can be absolutely God tier.
The above applies mostly to Dying Earth. His style is mainstreamed in his later works from what I've read. It's not as flowery. The story is kind of a picaresque that doesn't bother with magic systems and bullshit like that. Probably why just a few adjectives here and there give a beautiful image of magic, full of wonder and free of technical crap. Wizards just cast instant spells and that's it. The full imaginative freedom of the pulp era.

Wolfe was inspired from the setting, not the writing or the themes themselves.

>that doesn't bother with magic systems and bullshit like that.
lol Jack Vance is the first writer to actually use a "magic system" in one of his Dying Earth stories. Of course he couldn't have predicted the flood gates he would open decades later. D&D is more to blame for that than Vance though.

>> No.16082154

>>16081979
I'm ESL as well. You just have to get into his rhythm, to appreciate it. It's hard to find just one beautiful passage, because the whole writing feels entirely magical and immersive once you start getting it.
He also sometimes employs a neat textual trick I found while reading Lyonesse, where he lays and paces the opening and closing dialogue action "tags" (eg "'Dialogue,' HE SAID.", or "HE STARTED, 'dialogue'") in such a way the conversation feels like an actual ping pong. He'll have a few short outbursts without tags, then one character will speak with an opening tag, and the other will respond with a closing tag.

>"You are sauntering along the back streets of Avallon; you step into a tavern for a cup of wine. A great lummox claims that you have molested his wife; he takes up his cutlass and comes at you. So now! With your knife! Draw and throw! All in a single movement! You advance, pull your knife from the villain's neck, wipe it on his sleeve. If in fact you have molested the dead churl's wife, bid her begone! The episode has quite dampened your spirit. But you are attacked from another side by another husband. Quick!"

>"What are your fees?" inquired Guyal cautiously. "I respond to three questions," stated the augur. "For twenty terces I phrase the answer in clear and actionable language; for ten I use the language of cant, which occasionally admits of ambiguity; for five, I speak a parable which you must interpret as you will; and for one terce, I babble in an unknown tongue."

>"I admit to a specialized occupation, which in fact has not so much as acquired a name. Not to put too keen an edge on it, I wait under gallows until the corpse drops, whereupon I assume possession of the clothes and valuables. I find little competition in the field; the work is dull, and I will never become wealthy, but at least it is honest, and I have time to daydream."

>> No.16082166

>>16082154
That's not too bad but I never found dialogue that hard. It's the other stuff, exposition and description of things.

>> No.16082168

>>16082035
It's not a magic system in the sense of the Alar bullshit of Name of the Wind, where you have to read 30 pages to get a clear picture just because the writer decided you need to fully understand it.
Nor Sanderson's retarded 4 gems + 2 rubies = x power.
It can be read quickly and fully imagined, like in a roleplaying game, except you're supposed to know the descriptions of the spells, so it's slightly more autistic, less imaginative that way.

>> No.16082234

I love Jasnah but the narrative talks of her like this was an ecchi manga.

>> No.16082338

>>16082166
Well, I did say it was his dialogue that was God tier. I didn't find the narrative particularly challenging once I got used to it. Maybe I've been reading English books for longer, and not just crummy prose from genre fiction or the so common unadorned modern style. Reading it out loud might help. Most parts just roll off the tongue.

Take a few simple examples.
>TURJAN SAT in his workroom, legs sprawled out from the stool, back against and elbows on the bench. Across the room was a cage; into this Turjan gazed with rueful vexation. The creature in the cage returned the scrutiny with emotions beyond conjecture.
The part about "back against elbows on the bench" might read awkwardly but its sense is obvious.
Or this:
>Three weeks Ulan Dhor sailed the nerveless ocean. The sun rose bright as blood from the horizon and belled across the sky, and the water was calm, save for the ruffle of the breeze and the twin widening marks of Ulan Dhor's wake.
>Then came the setting, the last sad glance across the world; then purple twilight and the night. The old stars spanned the sky and the wake behind Ulan Dhor shone ghastly white. Then did he watch for heavings of the surface, for he felt greatly alone on the dark face of the ocean.
It's slightly extravagant. Like "watch for heavings of the surface", he's just watching the waves, but that phrase is just that.
The impression I get from his prose is that it all came out naturally. It doesn't feel Baroque or like's he looked into a thesaurus to make it more purple, and if he did, well, he's been quite artful about it.

Your suspicion is correct. I only read Hyperion and the sequel, and just stopped. The frame narrative is gone, which made it a comfy and mysterious read. It's 3 books and they collect not only all the original Conan stories from REH, but they have them in written order and completely unedited. Plus the books have tons of extras and artwork. No other Conan collection comes close to how great these Del Rey books are. Plus Del Rey has other REH collections that are just as good. I own their Conan, Kull, Bran Mak Morn, and Solomon Kane collections and they're all stellar.

For decades and decades you couldn't read an original Conan story unless it had been edited or even rewritten in some way (the exception being the collection of 3 stories Karl Edward Wagner put out.) Basically the people responsible for keeping Conan popular didn't have any problems with shitting all over Howard's stories to do so. Those Del Rey books are the very first time all of REH's Conan stories had been collected together the way they were originally written.

I read it based on /lit/'s recs and I wanted to gouge out my eyes, in part for how it felt like an edgy YA power fantasy and partly for how terribly cringe the language was. Some anon complained about the "Say one thing about Logen Ninefingers" in Abercrombie. Well, I felt that way for the entirety of the book. I finished it thinking it lacked even an ounce of self awareness. Supposedly the later books show less angst and some character progression, but I'll avoid Mark Lawrence for years to come. As a matter of fact, I'll usually avoid a book if I find that Mark Lawrence reviewed it positively.

This is probably not a consensus view, but you can treat the three parts of the first book as three books, really. They all sort of have climactic endings.
Also tip: the book drops neologisms on you all the time, especially at the beginning, without stopping to explain them. Don't be overwhelmed and don't look them up in the glossary at the end every time, just keep reading. Most of them are either going to be explained a few chapters later or can be inferred from context.

I read this. I read the whole book in a single day, couldn't put it down. The voice in this book was unlike anything I'd ever read before, at times clashing so absurdly with the events being described that I was unsure how I was supposed to feel. It still managed to have fairly touching emotional moments, but the unique voice had to be toned down to allow these moments to breathe. The way this novel is written should by all rights have yanked me violently out of the story and made it hard to care about anything going on, but it didn't.

This is the most fun I've had with a book in ages.

I'm aware. The sequel being posted in an earlier thread this week is what made me pick up the first one. I'm still a little sad about how the first book ended, and not sure about how the series will go onward now, but the preview I read for it in the back of the first book was suitably intriguing so I guess I will be picking it up before long. I don't have much else on my plate to read anyway, besides some more Anthony Ryan books I have on order.

He's the perfect writer if you're tired of bloated epic fantasy, but still want to read full length novels. He just wrote solid heroic fantasy and was obviously influenced by based Sword & Sorcery. Don't start reading him though if all you're looking for is more shitty epic fantasy about politics and a gigantic cast of dull characters. If you actually want ADVENTURE in your fantasy and characters with depth then check him out.

Based. Gemmell's pretty unique since starting in the 80s publishers wanted to switch over to fantasy SERIES because Wheel of Time was making so much money and that was epic fantasy so all the fantasy series that started being release were also epic fantasy, but Gemmell went in a different direction. His fantasy is closer to Sword & Sorcery; which had started dying out in the 80s.

Serious question.
I have this problem with reading classics before I actually read them where I feel like there's no way I'll enjoy them or there's no point because there's so much of them in culture already.
Like is Frankenstein a good read? I, Robot? LotR after having seen the movies? So much of other media is built upon them.
I know it's the author's job to drag us headfirst into their world with wonderful writing but in my head if I read Frankenstein all I'm picturing is a bunch of peasants with straw hats and pitchforks wallowing around in mud and fields until it's time to get the monster. And the castle just being dark and spooky, inhabited by almost nobody.
Even Sherlock Holmes. My brain goes, "There's going to be a crime and Sherlock is gonna find the bad guy. The end."
How do I get over this sickness? I even know that I can because I read Treasure Island, by all accounts, if you watched any TV, you know the gist of that story, and yet I love that book. I've read it more than once.

>> No.16091719

>>16081443
Neat guide.
I always figured it would be a little different to tackle because it's a big deep book.
But it's literally, "Did you hear about Dune? You wanna read Dune? Read Dune."
Gimme a quick spoiler. Do I get a scene where I get to see someone get rotten fucking rich off of Spice because a worm shit in front of him or something?

Maybe I just needed to hear that a modern anon can still enjoy something so old and "plain" for lack of a better word, though I doubt it's plain because everyone knows about Frankenstein instead of some other work of fantasy. After all, they are still classics for a reason.

>> No.16091888

>>16091684
The culture is not an alternative to reading, i robot, for example, was a shit movie and the book is a 100 times better, LOTR is a complete different experience.
They are just not the same thing, spoilers might ruin some stories but usually very few film endings even follow the books.

No one has ever described Elric as being "fun," but if you are interested you should read the stories in published order. I tried reading them in chronological order (like a retard) and the later stories are nowhere near as good as the earlier stories Moorcock wrote in the 60s. Download or purchase pic related; that book has the earliest (and best) Elric stories. If you like them then obtain the other books in the collection and just keep reading until you no longer like them.

I've only read the first 6 or 7, the ones that are shipped as one saga, I believe in chronological order (the one that starts with Elric of Melniboné and ends with Stormbringer).
After the first book, all the sequels were just rogue adventures with a hellish dark twist. Similar formula almost every time. Elric's brooding as if Moorcock was making fun of him, goes on adventure, steals or recovers something and is tricked in the process, or exacts revenge at some point, battle of wits, more brooding at the end because some tragedy took place.
How are they not fun in a pulpy kind of fun?
>>16092311
People who like them are the sort of people who unironically liked the dialogue in Name of the Wind or enjoyed any Brandon Sanderson. Kinda Reddit or slightly YA, if you ask me (though you'd have to leave out the weird and creepy controversies surrounding Scott Lynch for him to be fully Reddit).
They're not exactly deep. The first book is actually the best imo. The second reads like some Pirates of the Caribbean rip-off, the third as if Scott Lynch was so obsessed with House of Cards at the time of writing, he thought it was appropriate for a series with some steampunk elements, pirates and guilds of robbers and stuff. Who the fuck would want to read a book centered around fantasy elections. Idk.
They're short. Just read the first if you're not crazy about it, because they definitely do not get better as they progress.

It's not even that; writers change over time and someone like Moorcock has been writing a LOOOONG time. He's definitely not the same writer he was when he first started; for better or worse. So it's especially stupid to read Elric in chronological order (regardless of what Moorcock says) because he's STILL writing Elric stories.

Owner trilogy by Asher is kind of anti liberal cause it's against a globalist socialist tyranny one world govt but doesn't deal with race per se
Hill of Ravens takes place in the 22nd century and is basically Nazi separatist larp porn but even though it's the first in the trilogy by date of publishing I would start with The Brigade which takes place in modern times and read the other ones in story chronological order if you still want to after , Ravens being the last
The Domination of the Draka is more alternate history which eventually goes into the future . Although outwardly fascist (a Sparta like ethnostate of whites in south africa but like master race super men takes over the world and enslaves everyone) they're not racialist per se, they take the best and the brightest, and are pretty sexually liberal too.
