Quite simply because men have to stand out from other men to get noticed (hence the fear of being derivative), and women have to fit in (or at least think they do) to be noticed.
Women, of course can be original but if they’re not they get the current bonus of being considered “the female Joyce” or something, whereas a derivative man can only shoot for “the modern Joyce” or something which has less impact because a) everyone wants females empowerment in publishing and b) the modern anything is shit.
