tell him that faulkner and steinbeck are unbearably based and then ask him to read a passage of ulysses that i really like so that i can hear how his brain processes it. that’s the fun of stream-of-consciousness writing. you get to think along with the writer. if you’re asking because you have an upcoming date with a girl who likes to read - good luck! and if you’re asking because you’re hoping to make a good impression on women you’ve yet to meet, also good luck. (if you’re just looking to bang tinder thots go for art hoes because they’ll see this bookshelf and not know a goddamn thing on it beyond the namedropping so they’ll throw themselves at you thinking you are an intellectual chad, but i don’t recommend degenerate hookups in any case. if you want to really pull art hoe pussy maybe put phenomenology of spirit on display.)

cheers. his 'The Idiot' is what I have in hand; good to know there is no reason to shy away from it.
cursory research into Litvinov showed only few blog posts praising her (and some for her life, as mentioned, moreso than translation).
will give her 'The Road to Life' a shot here but might hold out for more reliable Turgenev (if only because he's my favourite russian).

Besides, Garnett is my translator waifu. I love how dated her prose is; her faults endear me to her if anything. Meanwhile P&V's unacademic, pop-lit, marketing-based translations inspire only resentment.

Well, /lit/ is infested with mongoloids simple spewing the meme books, from time to time adding one or another, while never actually reading any of them. That's why the majority of you faggots have helves full of those same unread copies, more as decoration than for literary pleasure. And you know why non of you have evolved a personal taste? Because getting memed to read shit tier memes will holocauster all joy from reading. Last but not least, /lit/ is not only full of faggots, but also kdis which shill for those couple books which they got to read in school, like brave new world or something which they saw the movie off, without actually reading the source material.

Taking /lit/ for general recommendation means getting filtered before you even know it. A classical curriculum is what you people need, to not only actually understand thoe classics in their zeitgeist but to also destill your own preferences outside of nog-infested literary prices fresh outta plebbit.

I never said, start with the greeks, that's not the classical curriculum. A classical curriculum doesn't try to throw a retard into reading Plato, actually you would start as a child and read a cute version of the odysee, mythologies, the fales or homeric stories in plain english, to have a basic gestalt what is happenening when you later read them in full.
If you start as an adult there are numerious books which you should read, before falling for modern trash or antiks. If you're european, you will want to read classics like the herois poems of your past (Beowulf, Edda, Nibelungenlied) at least abridged and commentated, as they don't make much sense solo. This is where most fail. They have technically read it, but don't understand a thing.

After that you will proably taste blood and will want to read moar like that, than you can read the Song of Roland, Dekameron, Rabenais, Parzival, Arthurian sagas or Aristo. Somewhere there you wont need too much commentary anymore, because you will have a good basic gestalt. Now you have understood. I woulnd't read the greek philosophers before actually having read the modern classics.

For the next one you might want to get stuff like Count of Monte Christo, Verne, on Quijotte, Moby Dick, Don Juan or similar classics.

Next go for harder classics like Goethes Faust, Dante, Tolstoi, Puschkin and the other russian dudes, which alread implement some psychology. I would again recomment a commentary for cultural context, especially with the ruskis, it's essential to understand their work eyond a superficial level.

This is where you also want to familiarize yourelf with classical operas (get something like an "Opernführer). Classical music should as well be on your plate (Schubert, Wagner, Mozart, Bethohoven, Tshcaikovky, Mussorgski, Smetana, Holst, ...)

At this point you should be through most of the western canon, having a massive base of a couple hundred books, which through small portions have given you a glimpse of what you can expect from the real greeks, as they all build on them and christianity (you better also read the RSV bible and have a at least basic understanding of Catholic practices - why catholic? ecause that's christianity for those authors you're reading).

Now you can will need to read "the ancient state" and some commentary on greek and roman zeitgeist before being finally able to plung into poetic Iliad or similar ones. At this point you should have an interest on antiquety, like the summerians or egyptians.

While you do all that, you can also read political books or something for fun without a shedule.

As you can see it's an actual Odysee and not just a reading list. You will go sideways and explore your interests whle expanding the cultural context, making you even more fascinated with said works.

Once you have that classical curriculum intus, you can go and read your 20th century trash masters and YA.

Uhhh so whats the best Dosto transveslator??? Specifically for Brothers. I am almost finished with reading the P&V translation and have nothing to compare it to, but so far some passages have flowed very nicely but sometimes my pea brain wanders or it seems dense and has to re-read the whole page. Going to finish it soon but was wondering if i should read again in the future with a different transveslator
