Blitzkrieg: From the Rise of Hitler to the Fall of Dunkirk was pretty good for the early war years. It helps that it was written by Len Deighton

Panzer Division: The Mailed Fist Was another good one. Covers most of the of the war (from the perspective of German armored units, of course)

The Battle for Okinawa Is also very excellent for the pacific war

'course, these are not very good general over-views of the war. The Origins of The Second World War by A.J.P Taylor and The Rise and fall of the third Reich are the two classics.

I've just sort of absorbed it over the years through osmosis and various sources. But which front? Both? A general overview from the whole thing? Prewar lead up events and causes? or strictly post US involvement? Strictly Nazis, or holocaust? Too wide open a question really.

The Second World War by Churchill. It got him the Nobel Prize in Literature. Only Prime Minister to receive such an award.

There are a lot of aspects of WWII you could read about. But let me suggest one. Whenever I talk to people who were actually in combat, the thing that strikes me is how they didn't see it as really heroic or tragic, but just as not making any sense. The kind of thing that would have been hilarious if people weren't getting killed, almost like a Three Stooges episode.

The only thing I've read that really shows that side of the war is "Wartime" by Paul Fussell. "Saving Private Ryan" comes close, but only in certain scenes.

Yeah, although it's not strictly related, his book "Class" will also blow your mind. It's the kind of thing every American should read once in their life.
