If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumber'd here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend:
if you pardon, we will mend:
And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have unearned luck
Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue,
We will make amends ere long;
Else the Puck a liar call;
So, good night unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
And Robin shall restore amends

I was thinking, what was Shakespeare trying to say about art with this?

I'm pretty sure it roughly translates as "it was just a play, folks".

Midsummer Night's Dream was a weird fucking play for its time. Shakes is saying that if the audience didn't like, that he'll be back to his normal shtick next time.

>> No.1648897

Fucking rhyming scheme. He was trying to say "LOOK LOOK LOOK! I CAN RHYME STUFF SO THE END SOUNDS THE SAME"

Wow, these comments suck.

If you need help with homeowork just ask.

"scape the serpent's tongue" refers to hissing that the audience would make toward the play if they didn't like it. Essentially Goodfellow is trying to appease the audience and reminding them that even if faries weren't real or if the characters were just characters it doesn't mean that the story itself is any less powerful or moving and that you should treat it the same way you would a dream. An entertainment and a trifle, perhaps with a little bit of meaning in the subtext, but nothing to really worry about.

All the fairies rhyme in Midsummer Night's. It's kind of their thing.

OP here, I agree. That and the part where they all wake up and realize it was a dream.

No homework threads from my understanding, but then again, who really cares I guess.

Yes, it is homework.
