So i read Apology, Crito, Euthyphoro, Phaedo, Symposium. Whats next? I know there is lot more to Plato but what? Should i start with the Republic?

>> No.16491777

You forgot meno, crito.
And read the republic after them

I think if you grasp his metaphysics well enough you can go into Republic. As long as you're not reading it literally or as a series of conclusions, and just as applications of his metaphysics. If not read Gorgias and really engage with it. And don't get turned off by the monologues. He's more mature and confident in himself so it's a bit less socratic method type of rhetoric but he's still into that deeply, just he applies it in government, ethics etc. Protagoras is very even-handed if you're looking for that style. Get what you can out of him before moving onto aristotle. Don't forget to come back after Analytic philosophy or whenever.

I sure will.
Probably the most beautiful dialouges I read were Apology and Crito. Socrates's amazing virtues of character, his determination and righteousness.

What a surprise, i just finished Apology.
There are tears in my eyes, such a good dialogue...
>The hour of departure has arrived, and we go our ways—I to die, and you to live. Which is better God only knows.

>> No.16492071

fuck I have to reread the Trial and death after I'm done with the late dialogues. I rushed through it because I wanted to get to the Republic and didn't pay much attention.

so aristotle after plato? how do i know if i'm ready for aristotle?

>> No.16492549

>>16492529
Just move on when you're ready, there's always more to learn but as long as you get where his conclusions come from in overview then you can see how Aristotle's is then do the presocratics then a history of philosophy and choose what interests you next.
If you get into logic going back over some platonic dialogues and Megarian school and Aristotle and stoics is good to get modern logic later but they're always good to come back to. I find moving between philosophers makes the prior ones stand out more to see where they're coming from.

>> No.16492559

>>16492529
Also if stoicism and epicureanism interests you, that's another big metaphysical clash if you want to stay in Greeks. The stoics had some farther conclusions like their logic which descended from megarian school which was a follower of socrates.

i was just about to say that i'm really interested in stoicism and want to learn more from it since i only read 2 books (meditations and enchiridion). i'm thinking now to finish as much platonic dialogues and then going back to the stoics. maybe diagnose after them? will see but thank you for you posts anon i appreciate the help.

>> No.16492603

>>16492587
Yeah as long as you've read Gorgias and theatetus and republic you should be good but there's gold in all them. Protagoras is a good look at socratic method vs aristotelian rhetoric.

Ahh, plato's dialogues, or as I like to call them, Socrates harangues a poor sexy boy he's taken to grooming for the next 5 hours.

Also, read Thaetetus

>> No.16492615

>>16492603
i finished euthyphro, meno, krito, apology and will start phaedo today.
i will read the 3 you mentioned anon thanks for that, but do you recommend any order which i should read those 3?

Yeah like what the fuck is up with that?? After I read symposium I felt sick that Socrates was a faggot and a pedo.
