As a math major, Euclid http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/mathtype/euclid/

If the spacing between lines was smaller I'd call it an all purpose font, but it's impossible to fit as much info on a page with it compared to just about anything else. When it comes to reading, Helvetica I suppose.

Fonts are for situations.
In general use, especially for essays and other blocks of text, I prefer a strong Serif. Times works just fine for me.

If I need something eye-catching and visible from a distance, a sans-serif bold is the best way to go. I like Franklin Gothic more than Arial.

Script fonts are really only good for short announcements, invitations, etc.

For symbols and situations where strong identity is necessary, a specialty font can be picked according to its character. These are the fun fonts, but they're just too loud for everyday use. Papyrus is a great, understated specialty font (inb4 haters hating) that gets overused. I also like Eccentrical, Abbadon, Black Chancery, Betty Noir and New Yorker, but I don't know how many of them I downloaded and how many are default fonts.
