I used to have a great appetite for reading, but years of internet use have reduced my attention span so much, that I am for all intents and purposes - a brainlet. Has anyone recovered from this brainlet status and gone back to reading a lot? How'd you do it? Should I start with some babby tier reading?

I haven't been reading much because irl stuff has been not so great.

Get off the internet and read?
If you're on the internet, you're probably reading anyways. Usually when I stay off my computer, I find it easier to concentrate on a book.

Man, I tried. The thing is, I can't focus. When I used to read, I could do it for 8 hours at a time. Now I can barely concentrate for 30 mins. I've become a brainlet.

You're not alone, I struggle with this myself. I am always trying to convince myself to at least read a chapter before bed, but I always end up rushing through it and start browsing articles online or watching youtube. I used to be able to finish books in a week or a few days.

Grug recommend read small amount of rock, then increase exponential rock amount.
Start with ten rock, then after a couple week, twenty rock, then couple week, forty rock, and so on until at least a hundred rock a day.
Grug addicted to call box and video box as well, but now Grug read a hundred pages a day. Attention span not damaged, just weak, make span strong like Grug.

give it 1 week off the internet and you'll be a lot better already.

Thank you Grug, loved your work when you cracked the head of that murderer with a big rock a few weeks ago. I feel safer having you around Grug.

Maybe you just don't like reading as much as you like mindless shitposting. It's okay to admit that

Delete social media, force yourself to read. It comes back rather quickly

i get it. i love reading but struggle to read 10 pgs, and it takes me 5 to get invested
What i did was reread an old favorite, A Clockwork Orange, and was able to cruise through
that one is shorter too, but also familiar, i read 30 pgs a day engrossed the whole time

Read your favourite!

i go through phases like this with ADD. lately, when my attention span is shit and I still want to "read" I'll listen to an audiobook I'm mildly interested in (nothing i want to get too invested in) and play a game with the volume off. i also find that having background music helps me concentrate, so I'll listen to some random jazz playlist while I read and it helps focus my attention and keep my brain from wandering too much. also, having some kind of methodical routine or reading ritual is helpful, like brewing some coffee or tea, getting comfy, etc it's hard to read if you're uncomfortable AND easily distracted. i wouldn't internalize being a brainlet or put too much stock in it, I think everyone goes through phases like this, especially with the internet always at your fingertips. a lot of "peacocking" on /lit/ so I wouldn't expect too many people here to admit it.

IMO cut down on your phone usage, hard. I had the same problem, couldn't read more than 5 pages at a time, after which I'd put down the book and mindlessly browse whatsapp, 4chan, porn, whatever.

I stopped using the phone a 100% about a week ago, and I already finished a novella in just a day. There's a pandemic going on and I'm not leaving the house much so there's no use for it.

Ive always felt fortunate in regards to this. If i spend too much time around electronics it feels like my brain starts to fry and i need to retreat into a dark room away from it all. After maybe 15mins or so i can tolerate a small amount of artificial light so when i find myself in that state ill read and then maybe clean up around my apartment or do some food shopping. Something analog. I rarely allow myself to get into that state but since my country is in lockdown its been happening recently
