I dont like going too far into philosophy, its a huge rabbit hole I don't have time for, but I do like more modern takes, like For the New Intellectual and the books you mentioned. I'm more interested in philosophy at a meta level, insofar as how it relates to key figures in history.

Most of the books are from Brazil, but I am not from there, something everyone should do is buy books from "sebos" as they call it there, it is a book store where they sell old books, meaning they are very cheap. I went to one in Peru, it was very nice.
Even though Brazilians are extra retarded, they have pretty nice old bookstores and book culture, I really want to visit the ones in Portugal next, I hear they are even better.

Sorry for delayed response anon, wanted to show you pics

The Secret Garden is my favorite book (with The Opposing Shore coming in close second). This particular print is amazing, but more of a novelty than an actual reader. Its got a lot of pop up elements and colored stock, as well as illustrations. If you haven't read the Secret Garden (can't imagine you haven't) you better read it... its a classic childrens novel, but it hits you hard in a poignant way that you will never forget.

A Treasury of Classic Poetry has been my entry point into poetry... I'm not a huge fan, but it fairly good variety of the popular ones... -- Keats, Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Poe, Robert Frost, TS Eliot, Oscar Wilde, Walt Whitman, Kipling, etc.

Oddly, they chose Robert Browning over Elizabeth Barrett Browning (her husband).

But it has served its purpose for me.. and I can't complain about the quality of these Barnes and Noble hard bound books. They are dirt cheap at around $30ish per book. Smyth sewn, so they lay flat, and most come with marker ribbons and gilded pages

Tsja.

You're not dumb anon, and I'm not calling you that either. That book's popularity just boggles my mind, considering there's absolutely nothing new or interesting in it. It sort of reminds me of Gombrich's book, in that I'd give to a child. You'd be better served by saving up a bit and getting Toynbee's 'A Study of History'. Or Will & Ariel Durant's 'Story of Civilization'. I know the former has an abridged 2-volume version that's quite decent. You can find these on ebay usually.

I rather like the idea of pop ups in a children's book. If you have to read to a kid and get to a page, they can open it up and look forward to more later on in the book.

Have any of you come across a good set of Ted K.'s collected works? I bought this softcover but it's a bit flimsy and the printing is amateur.

Its a pretty neat feature, but at the risk of sounding like a grouch, I have to say I cringe at the thought of some childs sticky fingers rifling around in that book. Its a work of art, not a toy imo

But I also am kind of at odds with The Secret Garden being classified as a childrens novel to begin with. I mean, yeah, its got kids IN the book. But I think the vocabulary and the subject matter is a bit heavy for kids that eat tide pods and dance around on tiktok all day. Though I don't have any kids of my own, I have a hard time believing kids would appreciate it... maybe a non-bratty little girl would like it, being that it evokes something in people with more emotional sensibilities... i dunno. But yeah, its cool for sure.
