He's not overrated, people never mention anything by him other than his first two books, and even that rarely, at least compared to standard lit stuff. Also, The Recognitions is his best book.

It is just the inferior version of JR. He took what was good above The Recognitions into JR while trimming off everything that made it a superfluous 'first novel'. The only other Gaddis book that could be considered great is A Frolic of His Own, but it I would never say it is a masterpiece or a great novel of the 20th century.

What did he do in The Recognitions that was not redone and surpassed in JR?

Buttblasted Gaddisfags everyone.
His only contribution to lit is maybe transitioning the literary zeitgeist from modernism to postmodernism, but was eternally BTFO'd by the arrival of a far more gifted writer just 8 years after his debut and had been bitter since till death. This board loves to shit on DFW, but in IJ and Pale king Wallace wrote with more sincerity and genuity than Gaddis could muster in his entire life. Nigga was so angry he was less Gaddis more Gaddafis. Lol.

JR by William Gaddis

It's a significant book that, despite its significance, goes out of print every few years, and until recently cost $100 or so for a used paperback.
