the thing about lovecraft is that he didnt embrace the flaws he saw in reality and didnt try to holistically write about the world like a romancier. he instead just flat out didnt even touch on them (sex, niggers, money, realism in general) in his "big" texts.

just like any writer, his personality shows through, but on top of that he was one of the first to write truly scary slow burn horror stories about aliens. He was an alienated, intelligent, sad, angry, scared but hopeful man writing about the concept of mankind coming face to face with some kind of alien force or entity that reshapes their entire understanding because of how little they truly know, on top of that force being a horrifying revelation and not just a scientifically interesting one

they think he's the be-all end of cosmic horror because their entire exposure to horror-literature is driven by cthulu plushies and le epic cthulu in all things pop-media, not realizing he's a chain-link in a long line of cosmic horror writers, some who have surpassed him, in my opinion (although I take nothing away from lovecraft, he was a fucking titan in cosmic horror).
Machen, algernon blackwood, Nathaniel Hawthorne, all came before; The White People and the Great God Pan are two of my favorite stories which definitely influences lovecraft.
Modern-day, Thomas Ligotti surpassed lovecraft with his weird-fiction-esque horror, elevated that shit to pure literature.
