I believe it's in one sense supposed to be a satire on the ubiquity of nudes/nudity in painting, or something like that. then again you might as well ask why the young boy, the dog, and pretty much everyone else in the painting is there. the title of the painting is "A Real Allegory of a Seven Year Phase in my Artistic and Moral Life" (the "real allegory" part is something of an oxymoron, that it's a "realist" painting, but it's also allegorical.)
