Is this worth my time? Looking for criticisms strictly based on the content in the book and nothing about Jordan Peterson.

Thanks.

When you just flick through the book and read the titles of the rules, it seems reasonable enough. When you read the meat of the chapters, you gradually realize more and more how batshit this guy is. I'm not even talking about the lobster part, this one is comparatively sane.

I don't like Peterson's from a theoretical point of view, but if the question is simply 'is this worth my time?', then the real factor here is how much time would you have to invest in it?

Yes, give this one ago. Don't bother with Maps of Meaning, I did finish it but it wasn't worth it. It's best to judge Peterson by his own words. His opponents constantly misrepresent him and even lie about some of the things he is supposed to have said.

He's not a great writer, the points he makes are obvious but reading / listening to him creates a sense of urgency to improve and take life more seriously.

Nah, it just reiterates themes he explored elsewhere. The Art of Worldy Wisdom by Balthazar will help you infinitely more than this book.

Listen to a Peterson Biblical Lecture or some of his early podcast for better info. By the time he wrote this he was overexposed in media and spiraling out on a benzo addiction so its not his best work. Maps of Meaning is interesting

Peterson's 12 Rules is an amazing work! Specially the way he reconciles science and religion, it's extraordinary, specially if you're familiar with his references (Carl Jung, Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, archetypes, etc) this book is a very good summary of what he teaches in his lectures.

also check out his Bible Series, it's an amazing perspective on the whole Genesis stories and a truly enriching one!
cheers anon

I have a few problem with this book:
1. Jung is pseudoscience
2. Peterson doesn’t understand postmodernism.
3. Talking about cheating like it’s a big deal.
4. He is quoting Nietzsche all the time except when he is speaking about religion
5. Christianity

No, it's needlessly obtuse. Peterson has to spend a dozen pages beating around the bush to get the simplest point across and even then he keeps it as vague as possible. Reading the chapter titles will give you 80% of the books content.

>> No.17050324

The only good part is where he tells you to stop being girly and how women who focus on their career are retarded. Gave it a 3/5 on goodreads.

Just watch this instead. it's the abridged version of the book as a talk, which is what JP is actually good at.
I was absolutely fascinated by the video when I watched it high

>> No.17050810

I've read it, but you can open the table of contents, read the chapter titles and you've probably gotten 95% of the book.

There is some interesting stuff in there, but his christian influences, jungian pseudoscience, and hypocritical conclusions about the entire "leftist post-modern marxists'' as a singular ideology is constantly slipped in-between a few very obvious ideas and basic 'rules'. Peterson's lectures share this problem, but because of his stance on SJW's I feel he has been a gateway to the entire fucked-up world of self-help for a lot of men, so watch his videos with a grain of salt.

>> No.17050862

I don't love Peterson, but all of the criticism I have seen, including that from this thread so far, is such garbage. I see the book as more of an analysis of humans today than the self-help book everyone memes it as. Even if it was, he is a clinical psychologist, so it's not like it is coming out of nowhere. Don't know if any of that means anything to you.

has some good general advie that most people would agree on. the problem with this book (and many of his lectures) is that he tries to build a bridge from political history, philosophy and sociology to his advice which can be very misleading and misinformed.
Take anything he says with a grain of salt and please don't pretend that he is free from any ideology. Research those historical events that he mentions. He's not a historian nor a philosopher.
