It was more his prose that got him the fame originally. He was very sharp and grabbed onto the reader with his detective style
The reason for his enduring popularity has more to do with academics than himself
Freudian analysis really loosens the tongue and you can write everything about anything so literature professors jumped onto it and it kinda stuck for a while
Psychoanalysis is still a thing in literary analysis and it's not completely useless in therapy (honestly the evidence that any kind of therapy works better than others is pretty pathetic. Freud himself was a terrible therapist though)
