Is Virgil a good place to start with the Romans?

Not a bad choice but I would recommend Ovid as a starting off point. Cicero for philosophy.

While this is true I think he's a better primer for Roman literature as a whole.

Really? I don't think Ovid is that hard to read but Virgil is really easy to read. To be fair I've only read The Aeneid.

'dulces exuviae, dum fata deusque sinebat,
accipite hanc animam meque his exsolvite curis.
vixi et quem dederat cursum Fortuna peregi,
et nunc magna mei sub terras ibit imago.
urbem praeclaram statui, mea moenia vidi, 655
ulta virum poenas inimico a fratre recepi,
felix, heu nimium felix, si litora tantum
numquam Dardaniae tetigissent nostra carinae.'
dixit, et os impressa toro 'moriemur inultae,
sed moriamur' ait. 'sic, sic iuvat ire sub umbras. 660
hauriat hunc oculis ignem crudelis ab alto
Dardanus, et nostrae secum ferat omina mortis.'
dixerat, atque illam media inter talia ferro
conlapsam aspiciunt comites, ensemque cruore
spumantem sparsasque manus. it clamor ad alta 665
atria: concussam bacchatur Fama per urbem.
lamentis gemituque et femineo ululatu
tecta fremunt, resonat magnis plangoribus aether,
non aliter quam si immissis ruat hostibus omnis
Karthago aut antiqua Tyros, flammaeque furentes 670
culmina perque hominum volvantur perque deorum.

Maybe it's because I find Ovid more interesting than Virgil. His language is more fanciful than Virgil's but not necessarily more difficult.

Catullus -> Horace -> Virgil -> Ovid -> Petronious
Though everyone is gargling Callimachus' balls so check out the Nisetich translation of him if interested.

Quamquam Aeneis difficilior sit omnibus libris Ovidii, Ovidius mea quidem sententia omnino Vergilio difficilior est. Dixerim tamen Catullum optimam adumbrationem carminum Romanorum ob copiam argumentorum farinarumque versuum. Delectata sum tamen maxime Tibullo, sed non suadeam tirones ut eum legant primum.

A Latin scholar once asked a Greek scholar what his favourite work by Virgil was. The Greek scholar paused for a moment and replied: "The Divine Comedy".

In English or in Latin? If you're reading translations, I suggest reading pic related. It's a good starting point for Roman literature, doesn't take too long to read, and you can see which authors you like without wasting time on those you don't.
