Why is Dune considered Science Fiction?

It's a fantasy that just happens to take place tens of thousands of years in the future.

>> No.1739917

Then what is your definition of science fiction?

Fiction using as of yet not practical but still possible science?

>Your face when you realize that Dune is an allegory for the Middle East and that the Fremen are the warring Arab tribes, Paul is Mohammad, Spice is oil, and the Corrino Empire represents the Western World

Because it revolves around a certain kind of tech that defines the entire era it is set in.

But I have to agree with you it's pretty much just a bit more sci-fi than the Star wars universe

>> No.1741905

Sci - fi usually needs a "What if...." element to it to make it sci fi.

Dune seems to have a reasonable discussion of resorces running out and everyone going apeshit over what is left (water & spice)
