This is a based take. IQ tests measure rudimentary cognitive skills, executive functioning, and quiz boy knowledge which is largely necessary but not sufficient for higher level intellect. You can have an efficient brain but be a total spud with no thymes or aesthetic sense. E.g. lawyers

A modestly intelligent high-schooler (i.e.: the kind of person you'd expect to be taking a Calc. class at an Ivy League) should be able to scrape by through the first year without putting in any more effort than just showing up to most of the exams. Calculus is literally every school's entry level, let's-get-this-out-the-way-tier course. In all his works I've not seen anything more mathematically demanding than a brief meditation on double integrals. Again, the kind of thing that modestly intelligent math-kids were reading about in highschool. That said, he's obviously excellent, singular and smart. Just not the kind of Almighty Genius that /lit/ of auld made him out to be. Same deal w/DFW.

I agree and it's not just Pynchon, I don't think most writers being posted here have an IQ even above 150 let alone 180. IQ has little bearing on literary talent and it's not like these people are proliferate in shitting out erudite books, most of their big books took decades to write and are more indicative of their learning and knowledge than IQ. My bet on a fiction writer with IQ above 160 would be Vollman. He publishes 800 page books on wide ranging topics every 5 years or so; and that would need for you to be a real genius. Shame he doesn't have much literary talent.
