Can someone explain the appeal to me?
When I read it, I don't see anything more than a collection of stories, nothing special that makes it any different from other scriptures like the Quran or Bhagavad Gita. It's unconvincing and the proselytes who keep harping on about the lake of fire and other nonsense don't help.
And yet, many great men in history sincerely believed in this book, so I'm thinking maybe I might've missed something. Have I?

It’s a liturgical document. For everyone who goes around telling everyone to read the Bible all the time, yes, even you Catholics, let me make that clear - It is a LITURGICAL DOCUMENT. It’s purpose is to be interpreted by clergy and delivered during the liturgy not outside of the Holy Tradition of the Church. It is not some Protestant Sola Scriptura manifesto that is supposed to move you to tears, even if it can have that effect on some people. You are supposed to experience it WITH the church. If you are literate and interested, by all means go ahead and read the Bible but please understand once and for all that it not only is the reason you feel animated by the Bhagavad Gita or Quran and not the Holy Bible because you’re a dumb disenchanted Western, but also because what you are wanting out of it, was never it’s purpose. Go to the Holy Tradition of the Church, study the Holy Fathers, and then contemplate the Scripture.
