Is it /lit/?

Calvin and Hobbes is one of the greatest literary works of the American century. Anyone who disagrees didn't have a real childhood.

Sort of. Honestly, when I read back through all of it a few years ago, I was surprised at how cheesy a lot of it was. The comic strip format really put constraints on the author's creativity.

It's ashame he couldn't write it in more of a comic format, telling stories with longer arcs, etc. It's be great as a manga.

As it is, when you read it, there are endless short strips of a few panels, all ending with a dumb punchline.

In some ways, I wish he'd written Calvin and Hobbes 30 years later.

He could have wrote in longer story arcs if he wanted too, plenty of comics do that, he was ultimately writing for kids like Calvin.

Really? I had the opposite experience. I went back and read C&H and I was surprised by how poignant it was, and it's even quite philosophical at times.

It's the closest that the medium of comics has come to being literature, and is far better than any other daily or even periodical comic book or 'visual novel' (this because it actually works within the form of the comic strip without trying to pretend to be something else or to aim at some superficial pop profundity).

>It's ashame [sic] he couldn't write it in more of a comic format, telling stories with longer arcs, etc. It's be great as a manga.

There were a few longer arcs (pic related), but honestly the smaller one-offs and 2-3 day snippets of story were generally better.

I think it’s just a way to sound sophisticated. Like if you know who they are you’re in “the know” and that’s meant to conjure a spirit of the old academia. Rereading since having known who exactly Calvin and Hobbes are, hasn’t shown me any indication their respective namesakes resemble their character.

>> No.17528778

>>17528698
Calvin is essentially a philosopher/theologian, he only sees the ideas. Hobbes has a dim view of society and sees the results. They also do touch more directly on their namesakes from time to time throughout the strip, but the names are loose.

Nonsense; it just happened to be the last 'great American newspaper comic' and hence the one most of us remember. Strips from the 20th century that surpass C&H in literary quality include Krazy Kat, Little Orphan Annie, Gasoline Alley, Pogo.
