You read it wrong. De Sade isn't arguing that we lack reason, just that this is insufficient to separate us from animals.
You might argue that primates posess limited reasoning abilities which would suggest that De Sade's view is correct. Of course, primates didn't build the Sistine Chapel so I don't feel that the argument holds much water.

Human nature is a super vague term. I am 100% sure that you can find books and studies supporting your intuitive believes but also studies/books that completely disagrees with them. I've read many different studies from humans are naturally not greedy but "reward mechanisms" in society make them that to Sade. If you are the "my opinions are based and epic and yours are cringe" type of guy then sure I don't care but if you are truly interested in the subject of human nature you should read more than just Sade. In a way, every human nature argument is refuted by the other one, like a never ending circle of refutations.
