Is it doable in this day and age? I look at writers like Elena Ferrante who managed this, yet had some journalist track money from her publisher to her to find out her true identity. What if I don't want have attention? This culture we live in is putting some serious stress on artists, even to the point where things they create are scrutinized beyond belief, and that fiction doesn't exist anymore.
Is it possible to completely skirt the whole media game altogether? I want to write, I want to be published, but I don't want to deal with the hoards of philistines.

This is exactly what will happen if you try to write or publish anything of any value. Vulture journos will track you down.

Pen names do not offer much protection in the end, any legal paper work like contracts requires you to sign with your real name, not legally binding otherwise. So every contract you sign also requires NDAs for anyone who will see it and on and on it goes. There are things you can do to make it more difficult, but it just increases the paper trail and the lose ends for curious people to find. Just do like Pynchon and stay away from the spotlight.

The bigger trick will be getting a contract that does not require you to do promotion.

Most people are so goddamn simple, all you have to do is stay off social media and don't do interviews and you will never be bothered by a fan.

Zero HP Lovecraft is the only example I can think of. He's publishing a book apparently. I don't think you can be popular enough to make a living from writing and still remain anonymous if you are a huge success or controversial in any way

>hey sean evans here and you're watching hot ones. its the show with hot questions and even hotter wings. We close out season 16 here with david foster wallace. you of course know him as the author of the postmodern doorstopper Infinite Jest. he's also famous for many of his non-fiction essays as well as many meme screencaps from that one interview.

>thanks for having me, sean.

>thank you for coming. so dave, how are you with hot foods?

>you know, sean, i've always felt that hot food was a quite lynchian experience. why do we subject ourselves to intentionally eating pain-inducing hot wings? we all go in knowing it won't be enjoyable, that tomorrow morning will be on the toilet with our sphincter being obliterated, and yet, we still do it, and I'm sorry, sean, but I can't think of a reason why we still choose to do it. I suppose that says something about the irrationality of the human conditio-

>oh uh careful around your eyes there dave

>its okay sean my bandana will protect me from the capsaicin [1].

i don't want my work read as autobiography. it is cheapening, base, easy. at the same time, i don't want to know so goddamned much about the authors i read. i prefer the words come out of a void and a vague historical myth. i would not want to see herman melville's instagram feed.

Indeed. Reminds me of some comic who talks about people lamenting rock stars dying young. "Kurt Cobain was so young. He had so much more to give!" How do you know? Maybe he was out of shit. We'd probably be seeing him doing a superbowl halftime show with Lady Gaga.

yes. get an anon website, paid for in monero, receive any monies in monero, deal with people via anon email. if needs must, get a series of shell companies in the BVI or worse.
you can be anon if you put a little effort in. some people won't get involved with you though, but their loss.
