Where do I start? Or should I skip the read and go do the dancing instead.

Whats up with dancing and Gurdjieff?

If you are interested in 4th way and Gurdjieff in general, you really can't go wrong with Ouspenky's In Search of the Miraculous. De Salzman's The Reality of Being is also a good companion book imo. I would definitely read at least one of those before reading Gurdjieff's own works.

I agree with >>17552379 that you should start with In Search of the Miraculous. Ouspensky's writings are solid.

Not good for beginners.

Haven't heard that name in ages. Didn't he become a cult leader and diddle his female followers (as most of them do)?

yes but the diddling gives him magic powers

Ouspensky’s “In Search of the Miraculous” is the supreme primer on him. Then, if you want to go deeper, you can read Beelzebub’s Tales, Meetings With Remarkable Men, and “Life is real only then, when ‘I am’”. Also helpful (but which most scholars can’t seem to acknowledge) is digging more into Gurdjieff’s ties to the Naqshbandi Sufis and the even more esoteric Sarmouni sect. This would mean reading Idries Shah, Rafael Lefort’s “The Teachers of Gurdjieff,” Ernest Scott’s “The People of the Secret,” HBM Dervish’s “Journeys With a Sufi Master,” and O.M. Burke’s “Among the Dervishes.”

I've wanted to read this, but I can't find a copy online, and it costs way too much to buy. Do you know where I can find a copy?

That’s actually a small passage touching on Gurdjieff in OM Burke’s “Among the Dervishes,” the majority of the book isn’t about Gurdjieff. However, it’s still a rather fascinating read and I’d recommend it. If you want one more directly about Gurdjieff, I recommend “The Teachers of Gurdjieff” by Rafael Lefort.

Sorry, I was lucky to find it on Amazon before it went out of stock. I’d recommend trying interlibrary loans either at your uni library assuming you go to Uni or your local public library, they can pretty much scour a huge amount of libraries to bring you very niche books.

The ironic part is I am a Muslim, I think perennialists are dumb but Shah tries to take Sufism outside of it's Islamic context. Taking a plant out of the soil just kills it.
