Light and Dark.
Festering in Evil.
The human Soul.
Corporate imperialism.

Colonialism as an attempt to impose rational order on an inherently irrational world, but falling victim to the nihilism arising from the meaninglessness of its own violence and bureaucracy/hierarchy it imposes on an alien frontier. The doomed attempt to control the uncontrollable, leading to an increasing descent in to insanity.

The conditions that rot the human soul.

I'll be honest, I didn't understand any of it. I did like the other short stories that came with the book though, Amy Foster was nice.

>"IVORY could be here," Kurtz thought. "I've been in this jungle a long time. IVORY could be anywhere." The humidity felt bad against his fevered chest. "I love IVORY" he thought. This Is The End reverberated his entire log cabin, making it pulsate as muddy water coursed through his veins, washing away his (merited) fear of civilization. "The horror, the horror," he said to himself, out loud.

This, I'd also add:
Fear of the barbaric/ the chaotic/ the primitive

That one in particular resonated with me the most. Living in a shithole and going to college by bus for some +3 hours, I was constantly looking through the window, and man there are plenty of really poor and violent places along the way. The same sort of fear comes to mind whenever I pick up HoD.

It was about a lot. There's the surface level colonization, but there's also the factor to which environment's change men whether it is a natural environment or an environment alien to their own.

>Colonialism as an attempt to impose rational order on an inherently irrational world
Almost. The failure of imposing rational order on an inherently irrational world as an attempt to exert power.
