np. have you read anything long in English before? most of the works listed are late middle school / early high school level in the US, but some might be a bit harder than others as an ESL. Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, No Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye, and Slaughterhouse Five are (from memory) the simplest of the ones in that list. I'd also recommend trying Animal Farm in place of 1984, it'll be easier reading, shorter, and still very enjoyable.

I've read Frankenstein (Abriged :c), The Merchant of Venice (Shakespeare), Animal Farm, The Time Machine (the one that's Sci. fi. HG Wells) and maybe 3 other random, fairly easy books.

I tried to read Lolita and not only got an awkward boner midway, but also had to open up sparknotes at just chapter 5. I've read 1984 and I found it comparitively easy. I also tried reading Of Mice and Men but it had too many details for me, but still was easier than Lolita.

Yeh Lolita is a step or two more difficult than the others, especially given the unreliability of the narration.

Try Slaughterhouse Five next. Vonnegut is super light reading (at least to me -- I rarely consider how something might be to an ESL) but also very entertaining and contains as substantial of themes as any major literary work, just given very literally and without a ton of subtlety -- which, I'd think, will actually be useful for you.

>Have you looked into his work on the reliability of the NT?
I've watched some of his lectures on this, but I have not read his academic books on this (as opposed to the ones he writes for the general public). Other than that I've read some of his blog, which is quite interesting but not enough for me to read it regularly. I prefer Edgar Foster's blog, he will regularly post content relating to the Greek which is my area of interest.
>Also can you recommend books on the formation of the canon/corruption of the texts.
If you want to learn about the formation of canon, and some questions Christians must deal with and ponder on today, then Metzger's book on the canon (the one at the bottom of my stack) is an valuable resource. As well as Gallagher and Meades' The Biblical Canon Lists from Early Christianity. The appendix of this work also contains information regarding the non-canonical works that were still used widely in the early Church, information such as which church fathers accepted it, etc. As for the "corruption," I think thats a loaded term, since there wasn't any organized corruption of scripture which anyone who is familiar with the various manuscripts will know (read through the variants that Metzger discusses in his textual commentary, you would be hard pressed to find any strictly theologically motivated variants). The best defense of the traditional canon and against the myths about textual criticism would be Pickering's The Identity of the New Testament
>I have found this to be the area that non-Christians attack the most.
Yes, mainly Muslim apologists on speakers corner take great liberty with these things. It's annoying as they often make many mistakes, or just repeat the words of scholars who are not Christian (something they would never allow a non-Muslim to do for their scripture / traditions).

Whereas many Protestants will have the general belief of a mass apostasy sometime after the Apostles, Muslims hold to a mass apostasy after the death of Christ himself. So of course, they won't look favorably upon what we know or have of the Apostles in our traditions. The book I recommended to you by Pickering deals with this, as he sought to completely defend the NT. It's the best defense I've ever read, and very exhaustive.

I'd suggest you read the work of Yasin Dutton, his essays are well written and greatly sourced. Shady Nasser's recent book is also worth buying if you can afford it. Here's mine.

Colour code:
>Green = I have read through it fully.
>Yellow = I have used excerpts from it for work/research/class etc.
>Blue = I am "currently" reading it (i.e., I have looked at it in the last month or so).
>Red = I have never read the book, not even enough to summarize it.

Sorry for the schizo picture; I have these in several shelves throughout my apartment and it's not very orderly but I didn't want to post ten separate images.

Not pictured: first two volumes of the Evangelion manga (green, blue), Tony Takezaki's Evangelion (blue), the first Evangelion ANIMA book (blue), The Noteniki Memoirs (red), Richard Evans's Third Reich Trilogy (yellow, yellow, yellow), the Oxford Handbook on Eugenics (yellow), and something else that I'm forgetting that I'm currently using as a secondary computer stand.

A lot of these are library, yes. Uni.

Yeah there's cringey stuff in here, intro philosophy BS and a whole host of leftie shit. Some of them were gifts and others I've bought to eventually read.

Fire away.
