Friends are lame. They'll fuck with you and drain you out just as much as strangers will. They'll take everything and ask for more. They fuck with you and they take your time and your patience and your attention. They get some sort of kick out of it. They'll ask you questions they already know the answers to and when they get those very same answers they feign outrage just to drain you some more. They'll make you do these fucking stupid ideological purity tests wherein they'll bring up some stupid shit everyone's already talking about and comb your answers for anything that's derivative of the norm or for words they were convinced were dogwhistles for some unacceptable ideology. Everybody's always talking and nobody ever starts saying anything. It's all hidden behind a fucking veneer. All the motives are ulterior. There's always some weird underhanded meaning behind everything they do. It's like interacting with a feral animal. You have no idea what they're going to do next. They won't even act like they're doing it and you'd wonder if they even know they are. They're all insane. Brain damaged. No control subject to compare them to so everyone acts like it's normal. All of them orchestrating micro-Machiavellian schemes against one another for schizophrenically perceived slights and attacks. Think they're some protagonist in a three act structure story and they need to get all the pieces in play for the next act. Don't bother talking to people about anything you actually care about.

Sure, in the least charitable way possible you could describe this as us using each other to stave off boredom or get what we want or whatever, but if friendship did not fulfill some human desire, then nobody would be friends. "Buy me beer get me drugs". All the same. All I had to do was lie to everyone about everything. Make everything up and act like people want you to act. A different character for ever person. Really simple just tell everyone what they want to hear. And then you realize they're nothing. It's like they don't exist. I don't know what's going on in your life but my best guess is that you've never spent time with someone you like, nor have any of the people you've spent time with actually liked you, so it has become inconceivable to you that two people could genuinely enjoy each other's presence without some ulterior motive. I don't agree with everything that other poster is saying, but he's dead on that people like you are everywhere and a pox on social interactions. Your only concern this entire discussion has been to try to establish dominance by gaslighting this random anon on an anonymous book forum because he dared to express an opinion of you that wasn't flattering, I can't even imagine what a miserable life you must live.
The other guy doesn't think everyone is out to get him, he's just pointing out that bugmen like you exist and dissecting how you operate.

OP here, back from a productive afternoon of Dostoevsky. I really enjoyed the scene in Elder Zosima's cell and Ivan's internal struggles with religion, and how this relates to the relationship between Dmitri and Katerina. Both of these sections have much to say about the novel as a whole, especially when viewed together.
What did you think about that scene anons?

This anon is partly right. There was a time when I thought like this too. It is true that to have friends you have to put up with lots of behavior whose true motives are insecurities, pride, envy, vanity, etc.
Your friends WILL lie and low-key put you down sometimes if they have some ulterior motive such as feeling better about themselves because they have been feeling particularly shitty lately.
However friendship is still worth it. These same assholes will go out of their way to give you a hand when shit really hits the fan or you have started a business. Just the way it is.
That being said some people are truly irredeemable degenerates who you are better off cutting off completely.
Tl;dr friendship is worth it despite general human shittiness, but apply some discernment in choosing.
