honestly you should switch. I'm not a conservative, but it's pretty damn true that most english departments are full of ideologues and philosophical idiots. Most of them couldn't really tell a good book from a beer bottle .
(but a lot of stem/b/ros are like that too, just with numbers, so idk maybe i just hate academics)

Why are you even an English major?

I'm not suggesting you're supposed to enjoy it, but in the 2020s, it should be abundantly clear that you no longer have the luxury to go to college and pursue a certain degree just for the sheer enjoyment of it---it must have some use, some expedience. If it has nothing to do with your plans, and if you are not currently working toward at least hypothetically putting the learning and degree to use, then you are caught up in a worthless degree, wasting your time.

Having an English degree doesn't automatically grant you a literary career. Not in the least. You make it happen yourself.

I was originally going to do Law at a good Uni but I narrowly missed my grades so I decided to retake instead of going somewhere shit. But then covid happened and retake students didn't get grades so I had wasted a year for nothing. My parents didn't want me to retake AGAIN and told me just to suck it up but by that time all the courses were closed except an English Lit course at a shit uni. I had a law job and training contract lined up and my grandmother wanted me to become a judge; I feel like I've already flushed my life down the toilet and I can't stop to correct myself. I had planned on being a lawyer for years and made many steps in that direction and now I literally have no idea what to do with my life
>Having an English degree doesn't automatically grant you a literary career
I know that full well, I also know English degrees aren't that employable. I also hate this university and I haven't spoken to single person here. But whatever, I was the one who fucked up so this is my punishment. Far from every professor is full-blown “woke”. There’s a decent amount of intelligent, good hearted ones who don’t fully buy into the crudest excesses of “woke” culture and the PC mentality, but, overall, wokeness dominates. It’s seen, consciously or not, as the intrinsically correct worldview everyone should have. “Wokeness” always lurks in the corner somewhere. Even jokes about or jabs at wokeness reinforce the paradigm of wokeness. Intersectionality, diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice are the new sacred cows. If you find this overall atmosphere of wokeness somewhat stifling, artificial, and soulless, the problem is in YOU for being the bigot. The entire Eurocentric cisheteropatriarchal enterprise of the Western canon will be dismantled piece by piece. WOKENESS will only increase. I understand it’s not the biggest deal currently in terms of how it directly impacts your day to day life, but I can’t help but have visions of frogs being slowly boiled in a pot of water, and wokeness as a Trojan horse for a totalitarian Orwellian government. Congress is already working with social media corporations and news outlets to “censor dangerous misinformation about election theft and the safety of COVID vaccines.” This is an unprecedented attack on the 1st Amendment. We all can see the obvious conflation of “conspiracy theorists” with “whites supremacist alt-right domestic terrorists.” It’s a huge psy-op in my humble opinion.

I'm studying Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and in january we were subjected to a mandatory (graded accompanying exercise) talk called "Moving the Needle on Race equality", given by an otherwise respected pharmacologist.

Luckily the workshops, such as
>"Classroom Practices for Retention of Underrepresented Students"
>"The Souls of Black Folk: Notes from the Diary of a Black Mathematician"
>"The anatomy of prejudice: Brown Eyes Blue Eyes"
>"Equality and Diversity in UK Academia"

were optional. Amusingly, my university is not situated in the UK, so the inclusion of the last workshop was somewhat odd.

If a STEM faculty in a non-anglo country subjects their students to this, I can't but wonder what it's like at a humanities faculty in America.

Your degree doesn't matter. Your experience during breaks and summer time does. I know dudes pulling $60-70k out the gate with English degrees and dudes working as baristas with STEM degrees. Its comical at this juncture to assume STEM guarantees a job when it only makes up like ~25% of the workforce. Remember boys, its a market.

Do a conversion or transfer - if you like English as a subject there are still places at universities like UCL,Edinburgh etc for 2021 entry (assuming you're british rn) - otherwise apply for politics or economics at those universities.

That's true of STEM knowledge as well. Basically all knowledge, actually. But you'd have to be 13 years old to still think that people go to college to learn. They go for the credentials.
