>If you are in a strait, a very good indication as to choice—perhaps the best you could get—is a book you have a great curiosity about. You are then in the readiest and best of all possible conditions to improve by that book.

I have no idea what this means.

If you are going through a rough time or something, and you feel that a book might help you though it, then you're probably right. You'll tend to find what you need if you search in the right places, and I'm assuming that the guy who said this believes that books are the right places to look. This is just how I took it tho, i could be wrong, idek who that fucko is

Just like to remind you that kanye said, "me and taylor might still have sex."

a book that happens to catch your eye when you are in your most tragic condition is very likely to pick your spirit off the ground

He's not saying "and you feel that a book might help you through it", he's telling you a book you've been curious about will resonate more to you in this state.

I'll have to add him to my reading list. What's he written? I just got into /lit a year ago so I'm not very familiar with any authors. The American school system is trash. What are carlyls' best works?

Also Kanye is a musician. His best tracks are, saint pablo, fml, runaway, and ghost town p1 and p2. The quote about taylor is from his song famous tho. Also very good

his "history of the french revolution". don't be afraid to google names as they come.

Carlyle is a 19th century famously grumpy guy who liked the American transcendentalists like Emerson and was friends with John Stuart Mill

He is insanely difficult to read, everything he writes is dense as fuck. Best works are probably Sartor Resartus and his History of the French Revolution. Try reading the essay Signs of the Times (or some other essay) just to see how hard to read he is, especially if you're ESL. Very beautiful though.

Thank you kindly. I've added them all to my list. I will get to him eventually, I have a lot on my list. Currently reading tolkien, then I'm gonna read some C.S. Lewis and Dostoyvsky. Maybe I'll read carlyle afterwards but I also want to dabble in the great American classics too.

It would be more correct to say that he strongly influenced the Transcendentalists like Emerson, but I'm sure he did like them when they came.

Also he was friends with John Stuart Mill, but as he grew more illiberal their friendship grew apart.

I'd advise reading the suggestions in this order:

- On Heroes
- Sartor Resartus
- History of the French Revolution
