Finished the Turner Diaries the other day expecting a meme and what I largely got was a pretty decent action thriller novel with the first half of the book (detailing the events leading up to what happened in the novel) basically being exactly what is happening today in America. I think Pierce was having a lot of fun with the Turner Diaries, but I also think he saw what was coming and what's happening now. Pretty eerie.

I find Mexico's focus on creating a singular Mexican identity post-independence very fascinating. Each state has its own identity but the broader identity still exists. Surely Central/Southern American national identities can continue to exist while adopting the broader Mexican identity. I absolutely despise Latinx as a term and I will probably flip out if anyone says it in front of me. Le "skin color is the only defining trait" completely paints over the nuances of Mexican ethnicities and how there is a constant tension between local and national identities. My mother gets worked up even more, since she makes it clear she's a Northern Mexican not a Southern one. Not to mention that skin tone DOES NOT unify Latin America: my mother is often mistaken as Eastern Euro but my uncle was mocked because he was too dark to be in university. I had someone ask me why I called myself Mexican instead of Latino/Hispanic because their exposure to the term Mexican was through politics: they thought it was a derogatory term. I have to assume usage comes where someone is not exposed to different/multiple Latino groups [that are distinguished] and thus generalize.
