Halfway through this series (middle of book 2; please spoiler).

I'm liking it, but not in love. The writing's not spectacular, but Rice is a great storyteller (meaning, I can run my eyes over a page and not miss a thing), and the stories are very enthralling. The characters aren't so likable, especially the narrator, but its a nice, interesting read.

Also, vampire general.

In order of my enjoyment:
>The Saga of Darren Shan
>Little Vampire (adorable)
>Vampire Chronicles
>True Blood/Southern Vamp. Mysteries
>Twilight (Come on. You know its hilarious as fuck)

Heh, I'd like to see some non-sparklies for a change.

Its like they went from monsters, to sex blobs, to superhumans, to a combination (Twilight); Darren Shan being the weakest, "We need blood, but never kill, or bite, and we age. We just have sharp nails, and strength and run fast."
I like Rice's the best. Its a visible distinction between monstrosity and sex blobs with power.

I remember reading a Darren Shan book fucking years ago. Was pretty good, all I remember is a bit about showering in an icy waterfall (no homo).

i think i remember reading somewhere that he wanted his to be more believable/realistic, thats why grenades and spears and arrows can also kill them

I stopped reading after this...

Mhm, anything normal can kill them.
Its a little believable, since you're able to relate to Darren, and really feel his POV, and hop in the book but its not coming off as realistic at all.

>I'm 9 reading Cirque du Freak
>Darren's finally playing with someone his age after months of emo
>feels really glad with/for him
>he break's a kids legs
>horrible expressive imagery
>skin's peeling off partly to expose shattered bone
>Darren and boy are both screaming and crying
>he runs away, hating himself
>"And that's why I can never play with or integrate with humans."
>I'm horrified
>cry and put book down for 2 years

Please, elaborate your disagreement?

The first book was better, but it was too quickly transitioning, overused very vivid imagery (that fucking pedo scene) , and had average dialoging.

Thank you, Zed.
I wish it was, but not quite yet.

I usually frequent /co/, but it's gotten quite insufferable with Summer influx, and rampant fetish/pedophile threads, and just.. blatant stupidity, lately.

So, I'm gonna hang here for awhile.

I love the Little Vampire. I only saw the movie, but Its very cute and a bit Mature. i always wanted to read it. Also op should try the vampire diaries, its very good.

>> No.1784733

Interview with a Vampire is pretty good. The next book in the series, The Vampire Lestat is awful. Steer clear of this. You can tell that Anne Rice began to lose it when she decided to make Lestat aspire to be a rock star in a band.
Ridiculous.

I fully agree. The first was much better. A little too vivid, but quite good.
My teacher saw me reading it at the pedo part and was like "Heh, I know what page you're on. You should read part two, I'll bring it for you tomorrow."
So, I just accepted.

...The prologue nearly made me put it down. It was funny-bad.
But, I kept reading, and after Nicki (I'm a violinist), I was hooked, even though he turned out to be a horrible, manic-depressive, suicidal psycho...who love/hated Lestat.... getting gang raped by vampires didn't help him.
His oedipal relationship with his crossdressing mom is awesomely scandalous, and I mostly read it for the fantastic interlude of Armand's backstory, which is imo, the best part in the book (despite his horrible, gross, pederast, boy-collecting, master).

Also, I like the storytelling. Its very smooth, and beautiful. The dialogue gets way too long-winded, but its mostly good.

IWtV is very good and arguably is the origin point of the modern view of vampires. That is, getting bitten = getting sexual pleasure passively, biting = seeking out sexual pleasure.

When she decided to turn IWtV into a "universe" and a book series (9 years later!) with The Vampire Lestat, she just became a potboiler writer.
