I was reading Sickness unto death, and an important part of it is the idea of the Self being aware of itself. Now, from this I was wondering if this is what Consciousness essentially is. But that would simply be knowing that you know stimuli, essentially proving that we're just biological machines. And yet this in turn relies on the idea that what we are aware of is something to be sensed, but what sense is the receiver of "ideas,"?

It is making my head hurt. What is "consciousness,". Is it something physical? It must be shouldn't it? Someone help...

Yes, but Consciousness or the Self doesn’t have awareness of itself as an object of which it is also the subject. Instead; Consciousness is a pure presence that is continuously self-revealing to itself without that uninterrupted self-revealing involving the dualistic distinctions of observer and thing observed, or subject and object. This distinction of subject and object inheres in the intellect which is a separate thing from consciousness. Because consciousness is extremely subtle due to it being formless, partless and devoid in itself of internal distinctions etc, many people naturally struggle to distinguish consciousness from the intellect.

the intellect knows objects, this occurs via the light of consciousness allowing it to do so, consciousness is immediate and doesn’t require external stimuli for its own presence to be revealed to itself

Hint: Your brain isn't the seat of your conscioussness, the same way a radio isn't the source of a transmission. If anything about your brain houses your consciousness, it's the electrical signals between brain cells. And electricity is everywhere. Dig?
