These books are all well known and influential enough that you should read them. Many of them will have been read by High School (a least in the US). It's not a highbrow list, but it's a foundation so that you aren't borderline illiterate. I say it's still good.

If you need a "starter kit", you were ngmi. Growing up with parents who read at least a few hundred books for you until you learn to read properly yourself, being surrounded by discussions about literature, having bookshelves at home and so on are the kind of things you need. I'm so glad I was introduced to literature decades before I started browsing 4chan.
