I bought a kobo glo for about 50$ from aliexpress. While it is not the best there is and leaves me wanting for more sometimes, it fundamentally does everything I want. The kobo can do epub and a whole plethora of other formats. You can also put an sd card into it if you want to store larger files.
Essentially look around aliexpress if you want a cheap one or buy one of the newer ones if money isn't an issue.

Not that I know of. Usually ebooks come as epub or mobi. Afaik you can't customize the fonts, spacings, styles in a pdf whereas you can do that in epubs. Comics use a cbz file format. Everything I load onto my ereader is one of those.

You do need a separate app to open epubs so maybe that's why pdfs are more popular on pc.

I'm currently reading the memoirs of William T. Sherman, and it's awakened the civil war obsessed middle schooler I was long ago. I know I could read Grant's memoirs, Lincoln's speeches, Whitman's poetry, or even a slave narrative or two, but I want more. Any recommendations would be appreciated; preferably, works written during the period, but I'll take anything pertaining.

I’ve read a bunch of books on Grant and Chernow’s biography is the best. His memoirs are a bald, straightforward account with lots of omissions. It’s well written for something done by retired general in the 1880’s but it’s not the literary masterpiece people claim it is as they recommend it.
There’s something to be said about something written much closer to the event, but it’s not like Grant wasn’t writing with an eye towards his reputation and certain public relations disasters that occurred during the war and after.

This really isn't a question but I don't want to make a thread about it since this isn't /adv/ but I've found this board is way better than most others. How do I stop feeling professional jealousy? I work on my craft every single day, I apply and send my work to every opportunity that opens up, but I get rejected every single time. I'm excellent at what I do, I know it and I work every day to improve it. Why then, when I see the same two or three people on social media being awarded and achieving feats I'd die for I can't look at my work and be proud? Why must I denigrate myself if I know my work is good? Why do I crave so hard what I don't have and won't get just because they get them so easily (or at least it appears to be easy)? Everything after creating your art is so frustrating, getting published, getting awards, going to graduate school. Why do I need this in order to succeed? Why can't my work speak for itself? Why are the same fucking 3 people winning everything in my country? When, if ever, will it be my turn?

>> No.18306998

I'm a pseud with very little knowledge of literature and I'm completely talking out of my ass, but it is anyway.
It seems to me that if a work of art is truly above average, it won't appeal to average people, and maybe that's why some great artists aren't recognized in their lifetime. I'm not saying you're a great artist necessarily, but if inferior people are getting more recognition than you, maybe their approach appeals to the masses and your approach appeals only to the few truly dedicated to the craft. Compare JK Rowling's prose to some of the lesser-known great works of literature, and tell me if you think I'm wrong. It seems that to be a truly great artist, you must accept that you will never be the most popular in your lifetime. But again, I don't know much about literature so maybe this is way off.

It's about the stealing per se. More about the concept of things being evil. Say I consider X is evil, but I still do X, do I really think it is evil? No, right?
I guess I'll get answers on this when reading about ethics and morality.

English language question. Am I right in how I understand the word "which" to affect the meaning of the sentence here? (Ignore the obviously bad sentence constructions.)

>I will end the day with a walk to the race, which is short.

In the sentence above, the adjective "short" is referring to the race, since the "which" comes after "race". But in this one

>I will end the day with a walk, which is short, to the race.

Now that the "which" comes after "walk" it is the walk that is short, not the race.

I became interested in Nietzsche and specifically his idea of the übermensch. Sadly the topic seems to complex to understand from the Wikipedia articles and Youtube videos, so I came here to ask which books I should read to get a firm grasp on the concept. Thus spoke Zarathustra is an obvious choice, however I know philosophy is a heavy read, so are there other books to be read as "supplement" material?

>> No.18309464

>>18309225
Hmm, you could interpret "a walk to the race" as the subject of "which is short".

>Comics use a cbz file format.
but cbz and cbr are just zip and rar archives respectively, containing images named with a different file extension, so that comic book reader apps can easily identify them.
Seriously you can literally unzip them with 7zip or any other such tool.
I don't know anything about ereaders, but if they can open cbz that at least means they can also open zip file and standard image formats too.
Not sure what makes pdfs so difficult.

It's somewhat ambiguous, I'd not leave it like that. The sentence subject is the walk, you could try this,

>I will end the day with a walk to the race (which is short).

So it reads as an aside and indicates to the intuitive reader that the walk is not necessarily short (but the race is).
