What is the ultimate way to approach mastering the art of learning for someone who hasn’t made any effort to study anything school related?

>> No.18322532

Bump. And I started with making it stick. Is it worth trying or should I just stick to brute force my study sessions? Note that I lack the stamina to even study for an hour. Pls help I’m failing college

(1) Stop reading self-help books

>> No.18322659

Your brain is like a sponge. It’s going to absorb water that it’s exposed to when it’s immersed in it but if you want to absorb any water at all, you need to be exposed. The more exposure, the more absorption. Then of course, you can always take your hands and really soak that thing nice and good. That’s active and passive learning and really all you need to know.

I consider every book to be a self-help book

>> No.18322876

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP THINKING THAT YO DONT HAVE WHAT IT TAKES AND SIT DOWN AND DO YOUR WORK, the self help bs is a product and sells because it makes you thinks that you are not enough and there is a hidden strategy for success. If you are failling college dont wast any time reading stuff other than your homework. Sit down and write down the things you know you have to do and make your own plan, make to do lists. Study at least 6 hours everyday. Dont do any social media and take rest in your study sessions, but rest for real, take a walk, meditate, write. I have been there, you have what it takes, belive in your self and think to solve your own problems (sorry the bad english )

If you're in college FORGET about reading 200 page mass market paper backs that are really just conversations written down. I have noticed typos in these business books that make it obvious they were dictated on a treadmill. So listen to the audiobook and save yourself the trouble. Just because it's in a binding of papers doesn't make it a true book designed for reading just as there are many oral traditions better heard in rhythm than read in analytical mind. Make It Stick is better to just speed run through. It's repetitive enough you shouldn't sit down and sacrifice any time to look at it.

I read atomic habits and it's a really annoying book, most of it is stuff that you could already have guessed yourself if you just thought about it for 5 seconds surrounded by tons of padding. It's a pamphlet. tl;dr its about systems not goals, start as small as you can reasonably manage and be consistent, even if its doing 1 pullup a day, consistency and gains compound and make habits stronger and easier. There, that's the whole book.

It’s engineering so there’s not that much text. Just complex theories and numbers. I was just looking to maximise my learning strategies without wasting time, because I’m really tight on time.

OP here, just finished reading chapter 8 of “Making it stick”. What utter bullshit, the overall consensus is to stop while reading to ask yourself if you are understanding the material. Fuck the anon who made the chart and props to the anon who told me to stop reading self-help bullshit, you were right.

Bro im engineer to. You are better off studying with friends to focus in the important stuff and do sample tests over and over again. Repite and think less, is just math for godsake, focus on the class material only, you have all your career for real learning

People are not born with study skills. It's an unnatural behavior we have to learn from other people. Normally you learn it from your parents, peers and teachers in K-12. If you didn't, it doesn't magically appear in your head when you turn 18, you need remedial lessons for it. "Just do it" doesn't work. Case in point:
>>18326005
Every primary school student is taught to stop and think about what they are reading or just read, in the form of book reports, chapter by chapter reading and discussions... yet it's a completely foreign idea to OP. He needs those skills today, not tomorrow, so he needs someone to tell him not to have to figure it out by himself.

Yet, as is often the case, when someone hands another the answer they will slap it away because it wasn't the answer they wanted. Not much you can do to fix that.

Cal Newport's "How to be a Straight A Student" has some really good nuggets, OP. I recommend it. I could summarize it, but that doesn't give credibility like he does by asking actual students instead of BS research. It's also basically "Deep Work" except how to do it as a student since "Deep Work" is more general and has a difference audience.

I find it funny that the very people that need to read these books and learn the skills they provide are the ones that say “you can get it from a chart, self help is bullshit” so they can convince themselves they don’t need to read books.
