If you didn't get a novel done in the last 15 months or so with a global pandemic shutting stuff down, it's probably not going to happen.

Worried about the weird plot. The whole thing reads like a 2010 Obama is a lizardperson schizopost. The idea started off as a guy facing off against a bunch of wacky assassins and kind of went insane from there and now involves a nuclear holocaust Satanic sacrifice and hidden continents and spirits and esoteric street gangs and shit.

Although the worldbuilding and basic plot of my fantasy series is sketched out, it’s become apparent that I have no practice writing. So I’m writing a short science fiction story right now, thought of this really interesting philosophical debate involving aliens and whatnot that I think hasn’t really been explored yet. If at all. Which sounds crazy because sci-fi is such a massive genre and yet I’m unable to find anyone who’s thought of this before.
Dunno how long it’ll be, maybe forty pages? Half that? Half of half of that? Who knows. My only goal is that I share it with anons here and someone enjoys it. Maybe I could get in published in one of the /lit/izen collections I see sometimes made here

Oh. I also got a job working underway for the department of navy, I’m thinking of keeping a diary and then giving that shit a light coating of sci-fi, it could be the first science fiction novel to follow the extremely dull and pointless life of a grunt on a starship. I can combine it with what I got out of my worthless marine biology degree and make some realistic ayys as well

I actually already have. When I was a cadet on watch I saw a red flare shoot up into the sky around twilight. Textbook distress signal, and we were in the middle of the Atlantic. Ran and told the mate on watch, he didn’t believe me. Then two seniors came by and claimed to have seen it too. The mate said to keep an eye out for another, but because there was nothing on the radars and there wasn’t any SARTs or distress messages (aside from the fucking flare), he decided it wasn’t worth checking out.
So I either saw a UAP or the last light of a certified dead man.

A maritime academy training ship. We were way too far out for any small boat, nothing on our radar or AIS or ECDIS for dozens of miles. And nobody fell off our ship, we muster twice a day, as do most crews

everyone sucks at prose at first.
if you can focus on reading a book, you can write one.
it just takes practice and a dedication to your future self. practice daily if possible, but in spurts if not (like lock yourself away for two or three days)
my first stories sucked, my first novel sucked, but I persevered.

my pleasure.
was just recalling when I was young, I used to suck at dialog (everyone talked like me) so I would walk around with a tape recorder (oldfag here) and write out the transcripts of dozens of pieces of conversations of people walking past... learned a helluva lot

I just started writing one so I'm taking baby steps by not putting more than an hour or 500 words a day, whatever comes first. I've tried to write before but I usually stopped because of the awful prose as I am an ESL so but this time I decided that I'll just write however I can and everything else will be taken care of in editing. I can't really drag out scenes by making them descriptive yet so I don't think I'll be able to write a full fledged novel but I can get about 50 or so pages.

True. It was being stuck with my annoying parents for almost two years that made me realize I was wasting my time and finally concentrate on a long-term project.
