I read Eragon in 4 days. I read Eldest in a week. I never finished Brisingr, stopped reading halfway through. I was still gifted the fourth book, but I never touched it.

I'm still not sure if it's because the author lost touch and the first two books were genuinely good or if it's because the wait from book two to book three took so long that I stopped being a dumb child who read dumb books.

I remember enjoying Eragon because it seemed this cool self contained story. It starts off small and humble, lonely poor character hunting in the woods. It ramped up, but by the time I was reading the third book and noticed he was now literally fighting a horde of undead zombies... I just had to stop and ask what the fuck I was reading.

Anon, the first book is literally A New Hope. Eragon being a Star Wars rip-off does not start in the second book, it starts at the beginning of book 1.
>prologue with some princess being captured
>in distress she tries to send the plot mcguffin to some old eremit that used to be a powerful magical knight back in the day
>instead sends it to some young boy who grew up with his uncle because his father was also one of those powerful magical knights, but he turned evil
etc.

It's Star Wars by the numbers. If anything, later books tried to distance themselves from being exactly like Star Wars, all with Brom being revealed to be Eragon's father.

I had so much fun with this book series. I still have both boxsets hidden somewhere under my bed at home. >>18472030
Skullduggery Pleasant is pozzed now?! For fuck’s sake. How bad is it?

From when I was 8 to when I was about 12 I consumed a ridiculous amount of YA books; I remember borrowing one of pic related from my cousins house down the road and finishing it the same day. When I went to return it and get the next one my uncle flicked through the pages and quizzed me on the plot because he refused to believe I had read it so quickly.
I think reading Darren Shan’s books are the reason I’ve been partial to grimdark movies and manga ever since; I forgot how dark and violent they were till I flicked through them again the other day. I was so obsessed with him that my mum actually took me to meet him when was doing a talk at a nearby school - he was a nice but weird guy. Still got a couple of the books he signed for me.

The magic system was really compelling but the author's worldbuilding obviously didn't account for it at the beginning. There were way too many watershed magical concepts that made magic users completely broken
>suck the life energy out of things
>store energy in crystals
>magic can do literally anything given enough stored "effort"
>mind rape for weaker beings

I would love to see a series that utilizes this magic system, but honestly I have no idea how you would go about it. Any ideas?

It was a plagiarism of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, but there were still some cool ideas from one time to another.
Spoilers ahead:

>an entire non-theist race with a Spinozian cult of nature
>Some original races like Urgals, Werecats, Lethrblaka and Ra'zac
>Ancient language, name of the language and true names of people: though I suspect this too is plagiarized from another book
>The Isidar Mithrim destruction
>Eragon transforming into an half-elf in a mystical ritual and becoming a vegetarian after connecting with animals
> Arya being a roastie and refusing Eragon the incel
>Eragon and Brom's relationship
>Murtagh and Thorn are cool as fuck
>Orik's incoronation
>Soldiers not feeling pain (used by other fictions, but this was probably the first mainstream series containing the concept)
>The final battle of book 3 was predictable but well orchestrated
>The whole Elva's subplot
>The entire beginning arc of book 3, probably the best part of the series

In general I feel like 2nd half of book 2 and, most importantly, book 3, were the best part of the series

I liked a lot of them. It was a really fun take on dragons, to have them get involved in their rights and have different cultures treat them differently. They started becoming very repetitive and lackluster as it went on though. I only have the last one left but I probably won’t read it.
Also the parts about the dragons masturbating were fucking weird.

Fun for the first 4 or so books, plus the later ones that followed the earlier formula. Once they went to Greece, it gradually started turning into witch battle shounen. The spook himself gets sidelined, two of the books barely even involve the main characters, and the sequel series was obviously aborted halfway through, considering they killed a new main character that had barely just been introduced before any significant development could take place.
