Is Bob Dylan the premier post-modern artist? I've been digging into these post-millennium performances of his songs and they are so intriguing. Yeah, he can't sing, but the performance comments on the original in a way that rock music rarely achieves — very literary. Maybe the Nobel was deserved?

Dylan is a great songwriter but he'll be forgotten after the boomers die out.

Love Dylan. You always find something new every time you listen to him. No artist has more bootlegs and live versions of his songs that sound completely different from the original version.

It sounds cool but it's not that very hard to perform your own songs slower and give it a "completely different feel." I don't think it makes you postmodern either. Lots of rock artists do this with their arrangements. The Velvet Underground reunion from 1993 is the first that comes to mind. Very different instrument fretting and vocal phrasing from the original studio recordings.

dylan is probably the only one of his (or any) generation who has successfully herded his music toward something beyond dignified old age, coming closest to cracking pop music's unsolvable problem. even then it's an acquired taste; since no one wants to see gramps rocking out in a leather vest, your late-career esteem relies on singing (the 'ideal' old fart is still capitol era sinatra, blue eyes traded in for grey hairs), and dylan's shredded wolfman growl stands in stark contrast to this notion. defiant, even

and that's not to shit on a guy like, say, neil young who can play an intense show well into his seventies, but those performances are just that: wilder, hairier versions of his album cuts with longer solos. proficient feats of stamina. artistry and adventure do not play into it: no one walks out of a springsteen concert upset the way they can leave a dylan set of totally rearranged classics

an obligatory word on cohen: his transition to seniority was successful too, almost undetectable, and in a way his natural state, but that's because he was always 'old' in more than one sense. he never faced the stakes dylan has had to deal with for the last fifty years, give or take
