Magical realism means taking the normal world and adding a few weird magical elements and then telling it all deapan and straight as though it were *all* realistic, rather than just most of it.

People like Joyce do the opposite. With Joyce all the weirdness is in the TELLING. He uses strange modes of narrative to try to convey what is actually normality.

Obviously the line between these things can get blurred if you don't agree on what's the "underlying reality" the author is trying to depict. But in theory they're very different.

Here's an example. Suppose you're describing a scene in a bar.

Joyce might use elaborate metaphors or flights of fancy with mermaids or something to describe what it feels like to get drunk and look at women. A magical realist writer, though, might have a guy go into a bar *and actually meet a real mermaid*.

Pynchon very certainly is a genre writer. Hard sci-fi with some shithousery in GR and pure sci-fi in Atd. Being genre is not a bad thing. If your work has merit it will be elevated. Look at Gene Wolfe.

What genre would you consider authors like Kafka, Burroughs, Bruno Schulz, Lispector etc? They all mix the mundane with the fantastic but I don't know if magical realism is the correct term, it's too dark usually

Universal history would be better in my opinion if he had more heart in them. He says in the prologue that he was not taking them seriously and it shows. Widow te Ching is a standout among the longer ones though. And one about that japanese lord.
